Junior Achievement And Service Nominees Feted By Chamber

Each year, the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce honors members of the community for Citizen of the Year, Business of the Year, Junior Achievement, Community Service, and Lifetime Achievement. The annual Oakdale Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet is scheduled for this Friday and this week we profile those in the running for Junior Achievement and Community Service along with the remaining two 2016 Business of the Year nominees.

FLAG PROJECT PREP

In advance of placing American flags throughout the community for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday observance on Monday, Jan. 16, Oakdale Lions Club members Alan Turner, left, and Don Lee vacuumed out and prepared the post holes on Saturday morning, Jan. 14. Lee is the project chairman and said there are specific routes that the Lions Club has for flag placement on holidays; with 340 total flags placed, along East F, West F and an area encompassing First, Second and Third streets as well as North and South Yosemite avenues.

Stanislaus County Health Services Agency officials are reporting the first influenza (flu) associated death for the 2016-2017 flu season. The deceased, a 59 year-old man, had multiple underlying medical conditions, and died on Monday, Jan. 9.

Wounded Warrior Joins Denham Staff

U.S. Representative Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) on Tuesday welcomed retired Staff Sgt. Peter Butler of Turlock as a Wounded Warrior Fellow in his Modesto office. Mr. Butler is a seven-year veteran of the United States Army, having served two tours in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom where he earned both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Caltrans Appoints New Strategic Chief

Caltrans recently announced the appointment of Blair Thompson to be its first Chief of Innovation, Risk and Strategic Management. Thompson will oversee a newly created office, tasked with developing ways to streamline and improve department performance. In addition, Thompson will manage and implement the 2015-2020 Strategic Management Plan, as well as additional innovation initiatives and risk management projects.

Small Hike Seen In Local Gas Price

Average retail gasoline prices in Modesto have risen 4.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.62/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 201 gas outlets in Modesto. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.37/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
