Council Session Sees Snub Of Revised Sign Ordinance

After giving direction to city staff to revise a dated sign ordinance after it granted approval of an LED sign on the east side of town, the Oakdale City Council members decided to take no action at its Monday, March 21 meeting on a presented revision by City Manager Brian Whitemyer.

Successful Central Valley Women Schedule Benefit Film Screening

The Successful Women of Central Valley (SWCV), a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, will host a benefit film viewing of "Half the Sky" at the State Theatre in Modesto on Thursday, March 31. Proceeds will benefit three local women's groups: the Haven Women's Center of Stanislaus, Without Permission, and Successful Women of Central Valley. All three organizations have shared goals of supporting, educating, benefiting and improving the lives of women and young ladies in the Central Valley.

Candidate Forum Slated For Assembly Hopefuls

Who will help make laws that govern your life? The Stanislaus County League of Women Voters and the League of California Cities will be hosting a Candidate Forum where you can meet your candidates for the upcoming election in California Assembly District 12. It is free and open to the public. The district, which includes portions of Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties including Oakdale, Riverbank and Escalon, is currently represented by Kristin Olsen, who is terming out of the seat.

Veterans Resource Center Opening Soon

The Modesto Library will host a grand opening celebration for its Veterans Resource Center, Monday, April 4 at 5:30 p.m. The festivities will feature U.S. Rep. Jeff Denham, Stanislaus County Supervisor Dick Monteith and other officials, as well as a special performance of patriotic music by members of the Johansen High School band.

Capacity Crowd Enjoys Annual Testicle Festival

There was no shortage of hungry attendees feasting on the breaded bovine nuggets at the 35th annual Oakdale Testicle Festival at the FES Hall on Monday night, March 21. The event, sponsored by the Oakdale Rotary Club, has been an Oakdale staple, getting the city national attention since the 1980s when local Rotarians sought something unique as a fund-raising affair that would reflect the local western heritage of the area.

Knights Ferry was awash in history with Confederate and Yankee soldiers milling about for the annual Civil War Reenactment held Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20. The Knights Ferry canyon echoed with the cannon blasts as the reenactors provided history, entertainment, and plenty of good old-fashioned fun for the annual event. Nine-year-old twin sisters Natalie and Julie from Turlock were in the Ferry for the annual reenactment, helping collect donations for the event. It costs $7 to $10 per cannon explosion and the American Civil War Association (ACWA) relies upon donations to keep history alive for attendees. A camp ...

Soroptimist International Schedules Motor Madness

Soroptimist International of Oakdale will host its annual Motor Madness fundraiser on Saturday, April 2 at 6:30 p.m., at the Gene Bianchi Community Center, 110 S. Second Ave., Oakdale. Guests will be entertained by Rob Ely who will present "The Rockin' 50's" and are encouraged to dress in 50's attire. The event includes hors d'oeuvres, wine, beer, soft drinks, and dessert. Tickets are $100 each and admits two adults (must be 21 years or older) to the event and constitutes one entry for the door prize drawings.

Wanted Suspect Stand-off Closes Street

Oakdale Police along with Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputies had West Avenue near West F Street closed off for most of Tuesday morning, March 15, regarding a suspicious incident of persons being held against their will. During the incident, one male subject was taken into custody for a narcotic violation and a female was taken into custody for a misdemeanor arrest warrant. A third subject, a male, was also taken into custody but police are not releasing his name or charges due to possibly compromising another investigation.
