Cowboy Christmas Expands To Two-Day Event

Judging by the healthy turn out for both days, the decision to turn the 19th annual Cowboy Museum Cowboy Christmas into a two-day event was a smart one as community members and western-oriented shoppers crowded into the community center Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25-26.

Measure $ Allocated

Oakdale City Council members wasted no time appropriating Measure O sales tax dollars. The tax collection does not go into effect until April, but the council budgeted nearly $260,000 of the money at their recent meeting to keep two firefighter positions, two police officers, and operations of the senior and community centers. The adopted 2011-2012 budget included only partial funding for each of those services and hinged on the passing of Measure O to avoid cuts.

City Lights Up

Oakdale will deck its halls for the holidays on Friday, Dec. 2 with the annual lighting of the Oakdale Christmas tree. This year's tree lighting was organized and sponsored by the Oakdale Garden Club, and will include 30 smaller trees, each sponsored by local organizations.

Gather 'Round The Christmas Tree

Cloverland Elementary School students help kick off holiday festivities by decorating a tree for the city's tree lighting event. The Old-Fashioned Downtown Christmas and city tree-lighting ceremony are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2. Look for information on both these local favorites in the Nov. 30 issue of The Oakdale Leader.

Cowboy Santa Rides Into Town

Cowboy Santa was sighted Saturday, Nov. 26 as he sauntered into the community center for his annual appearance at the Cowboy Museum's Cowboy Christmas event. Ever a popular staple to the western-themed community event, Cowboy Santa never fails to delight young and old. Community Comes Together For Veteran’s Day

The gray and somber skies and accompanying drizzle didn't deter community members determined to pay tribute to the nation's veterans at a special ceremony held at William A. Fish Veterans Park on Pontiac Street in Oakdale on Friday, Nov. 11. They came armed with portable tents and umbrellas along with their patriotic spirit in spite of the dreary weather.

Voters Approve Measure O

Measure O, a ballot initiative to increase sales tax by .5 percent within Oakdale City limits, has passed in the preliminary election results. Just over 56 percent of voters approved the sales tax increase, which will add one half cent to every $1 purchase made in Oakdale. This tax will go into effect on April 1, 2012 and will end March 31, 2015. Revenue from the tax will go directly to Oakdale's general fund.

National Retriever Championship Hosted Locally

Oakdale is hosting a unique pack of athletes this week for the National Retriever Championship. Eight-nine of the country's top retrieving dogs and around 300 owners, handlers and event coordinators are in Oakdale for the national championship event, which is held on the West Coast every four years.
