Currently in fourth place of the Valley Oak League, the Oakdale High School varsity boys soccer team earned a 2-0 home win over Kimball this past week. Oakdale (6-6-4, 3-1-2) defeated the visiting Jags (2-8-1, 1-4-1) on Wednesday, Jan. 17 behind great defense. Goal keeper Philip Knieriere had three saves. On the offensive side it was Esteban Garcia scoring a goal in the first half and Miguel Casillas scored the team's final goal in the second half. Eric Anaya and Juan Mata each had an assist.

The growth of the Oakdale varsity boys basketball program has been visible this season. Although Oakdale's record (7-12, 1-6) may not indicate it in Valley Oak League action, the team has made leaps and bounds on the hardwood. This past week, however, Oakdale fell to Manteca (8-11, 4-2) 64-57 on Wednesday, Jan. 17 on the road. Friday night, in front of the home fans, Oakdale fell to Sierra (9-10, 4-2) by a 45-44 final, ending the week with the heartbreaking loss.

In a week that saw a trio of Valley Oak League games for the Oakdale Lady Mustang basketball program, the girls went 1-2. On Tuesday, Jan. 16 the girls fell to Manteca 48-47 at home. Thursday the girls went to Sierra and lost 57-45 but they finished the week out on a strong note with a 42-39 road win over Central Catholic on Saturday.

The American Basketball Association (ABA) will call Oakdale High School home this weekend. This Saturday night the Stanislaus Super Kats will host the Henderson Hawks at Oakdale High School in the big gym.

My first tournament of 2018 is in the books. Fishing on Lake Oroville was tougher than I can remember. I was fortunate to be able pre-fish a day before the lake went off limits. Fishing was tough then, but nothing like on tournament day. If you were to ask any tournament angler, he or she would agree that fishing always seems to be tougher on tournament day. Personally, I like to stay as intuitive as I can, while doing my best to forget about past experiences on the water and let my instincts tell me where my next cast will ...

Oakdale High School football teams recently handed out the end of the year trophies to players. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day coaches, players, fans and parents of all three Mustang football levels attended the annual ceremony.

A long trip to Southern California paid off for the Oakdale Mustangs wrestling team. This past weekend the grapplers headed to Temecula for the Temecula Valley Invitational: Battle for the Belt. The annual tournament saw the Mustangs place third overall, scoring a team total of 209.5 points. Wining the event was Poway at 291.5.

The rain fell hard one day this past week and in a surprise turn of events, caused the Oakdale varsity girls basketball road game to be postponed. Tuesday night, Jan. 9 the Lady Mustangs (8-7, 1-2) headed to Manteca to take on East Union (8-6, 2-1) but due to a leak in the gym roof, the game has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3. Oakdale returned home on Thursday, Jan. 11 to take on second place Lathrop (11-4, 4-0). Oakdale fell to the Spartans in that contest, 54-36.

A painting of a Wilson's snipe has been chosen by a panel of judges as the winning entry in the 2017-2018 California Upland Game Bird Stamp Art Contest. The painting was created by Jeffrey Klinefelter of Etna Green, Indiana.

A strong offensive week propelled the Oakdale Lady Mustangs varsity soccer team into the playoff hunt. Winning two of three Valley Oak League contests has the Lady Mustangs currently in fifth place in the Valley Oak League standings.

For the second consecutive season, the Oakdale varsity boys basketball team defeated East Union at home. Last season the team needed double-overtime to take down the Lancers, but this past week Oakdale had little problem knocking them out in regulation, 54-43.
