Saturday Run, Expo At Galt Fairgrounds

There is a run, jog, walk, and stroller push for everyone in the family at the Fourth Annual Tiny Smiles' "tiny" Half Marathon, 10K, 5K Run/Walk, Kids Fun Run, and Health Expo, on Saturday, Feb. 6, 8 a.m., at the Galt Fairgrounds. This exciting event will benefit U.C. Davis Children's Hospital, Children's Heart Foundation and tinySmiles. This event is designed to create awareness of Congenital Heart Defects and raise money for the care and support babies and their families need.

Smitley Earns Unanimous Decision Over Arciniega

Justin "Bushido Kid" Smitley (10-7-1) earned more than just a unanimous decision over Art "King Arthur" Arciniega on Friday night, Jan. 29. The 30-year-old from Modesto, who trains at Oakdale Mixed Martial Arts Academy, battled his former training partner and former teammate Arciniega in front of a sold out Save Mart Center in Fresno for Bellator 148.

Lady Mustangs Drop Fifth Straight Game

The varsity Lady Mustangs basketball program fell to a pair of Valley Oak League opponents this week, dropping them to 8-12 overall and 1-7 in league play. Oakdale's woes came on a 47-39 home loss to Lathrop and a heartbreaking 56-53 road loss to Central Catholic. As a result, Oakdale has now lost five straight league games with five games left in the regular season.

Rough Season Continues For Varsity Boys

Three games, three losses for the Oakdale varsity boys basketball team. Oakdale (1-21, 0-9) dropped a trio of Valley Oak League (VOL) games this past week. Their troubles began with a Monday night, Jan. 25 home loss to Sierra (13-8, 4-5) 70-39. Two days later the boys fell to visiting Lathrop (12-10, 5-4) by a 64-34 decision, and finished the week with a disappointing 71-28 road loss to Central Catholic (17-4, 6-3) on Friday night, Jan. 29.

OBSA Evaluation Day Hits T.L. Davis

Nearly 800 youth baseball and softball hopefuls have signed up for the upcoming Oakdale Baseball Softball Association (OBSA) season. On Saturday, Jan. 30 the kids took over several fields at T.L. Davis Sports Complex in Oakdale for their Evaluation Day. Both baseball and softball players ranging in age from 5 to 15 showed up and showed off their hitting, base running and fielding skills during the try out session. If we put our minds to it, we could learn a lot from the Native Americans who preceded the white man as masters of North America. In reading about the Plains Indians who followed the bison herds it seems that the Indians utilized almost every part of the buffalo upon which they depended for their livelihood. I'm sure all of you are excited about the rain we've been getting this winter season. I've been keeping an eye on lake levels of our local lakes and they've all been rising. A majority of our smaller lakes are near full, while our bigger lakes like New Melones and Don Pedro are still below being fully operational. Mustangs Wrestle Up Pair Of VOL Wins

Eight-time defending Valley Oak League (VOL) champions, the Oakdale Mustang wrestling team, welcomed Weston Ranch and East Union to town for a triangular meet this week. The Mustangs made short work of the Weston Ranch Cougars, who only had two wrestlers represented for varsity. At 126 pounds, Cody Williams pinned Adrian Angulo in the second round in the first match of the evening. Williams led 5-0 after the first period.

Federal, State Rules Now Differ For Junior Hunters

California youth hunters have enjoyed a new benefit that took effect at the beginning of the 2015-16 hunting season, AB 1709, signed by Governor Edmund G. Brown in 2014, amended Fish and Game Code, section 3031, by extending the eligibility period for a junior hunting license by two years. This regulation change redefined a junior hunter from 15 years of age and under, to 17 years of age and under.

Lady Mustangs Fall In Homecoming Game

Winter Homecoming 2016 began with the varsity girls basketball team hosting the East Union Lancers. A sluggish second quarter where Oakdale was outscored 12-4, saw the Lady Mustangs take a 53-40 loss in front of the large crowd. The Lady Mustangs kept the game close throughout the first quarter where they trailed 11-8 after the first eight minutes. Colleen Ibasco hustled under the rim and gathered an offensive rebound and put back to make it 11-8 with nine seconds left in the opening quarter. Homecoming Heartache For Mustang Hoop Squad

With nearly standing room only at the Oakdale High School gym following the crowning of the Winter Homecoming 2016 royalty, the varsity Mustangs (1-18, 0-6) hit the court. Hosting the Lancers of East Union (10-8, 2-4), Oakdale was searching for their first Valley Oak League victory of the season. After a promising start to the game, Oakdale's confidence and offense both seemed out of sync as the Mustangs fell 70-43 to drop to 0-6 in league play.

OBSA Evaluation Day Slated For Saturday

In preparation for the inaugural Oakdale Baseball and Softball Association (OBSA) season, the association will hold its first player evaluation day. The tryout will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30 at T.L. Davis Sports Complex from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for both youth baseball and softball players. If rain occurs during these hours, the tryouts will be held Saturday, Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
