Athlete of the Week - Varsity Boys Basketball

Several members of the Mustang varsity basketball squad could justly claim rights to Athlete of the Week honors after terrific performances during Oakdale's host Rotary Tournament. Despite one of them being recognized for All Tournament production, the entire cast deserves this week's nod from The Leader after a thrilling effort in front of home fans. The team won three of their last four games of the preseason and bested a solid Grace Davis squad 42-36 to capture third place status in their own tourney during the holiday break from school.

Athlete of the Week - Kylie Gust

Oakdale High's lanky guard/forward, Kylie Gust, is the Dirk Nowitzki of Lady Mustang hoops. Her exploits were a bright spot during the OHS girls basketball program in the 2011-12 season and she has already made a big impact this year. She drained two threes and landed a team-high eight points as Oakdale rallied to a 37-23 win over LeGrand on Thursday as the varsity girls captured their second win of the season. Gust will be a key factor in Oakdale's success moving forward this season.

If you were anywhere in the city limits of Oakdale on Friday night, odds are you could probably hear the stomping of the feet from both Oakdale and Turlock fans hitting the bleachers, roars from both sides of the field, the hard hits or even the rich voice of Mustang announcer Pete Simoncini. However, if you didn't witness the Mustangs late fourth quarter heroics live from The Corral, you missed something special. The varsity Mustangs found themselves on the winning end of a 30-29 nail bitter against visiting Turlock in non-league play.

Friday night football is back at The Corral as the Mustangs hosted longtime rivals, the Sonora Wildcats in the 2014 season opener. Even though Sonora is no longer in the Valley Oak League, the rivalry between the two schools went on for 91 years in league play and still holds up as a big rivalry in California.
