Approaching the midway point of the fall Valley Oak League schedule for the Oakdale Lady Mustangs, Oakdale's golf, volleyball and tennis teams were all in action this past week. Following is a recap of the action.
While visiting a favorite fishing website of mine, a group of anglers were discussing fishing and sharing memories of catching their first fish. Can you remember yours? Mine was a Bluegill out of Lake Camanche while camping with my family. I can't remember the fight as well as I remember the feeling of accomplishment. As they say, "I was hooked!" When that camping trip ended, I must have driven my parents crazy while begging them to take me fishing again. Fortunately, my dad also liked to fish. The Ceres Seahawks swooped into Oakdale to take on the Stampede over the weekend in Cen-Cal Youth Football action. Oakdale's Peewee team began the day with a 19-0 loss. Things did not get better as the junior varsity squad fell 38-8 to Ceres. The JV Seahawks entered the game having not allowed a single point this season, but Oakdale snapped that streak on a touchdown.
Oakdale's cross country teams headed to Eagle Lakes of Tracy for the Valley Oak League (VOL) Cluster #1 on Wednesday, Sept. 14. The eight teams from the league competed on the grueling course. Oakdale's varsity girls competed in the five kilometer race as three members of the team finished in the top ten. Freshman Karina Prado placed third overall in the race with a 21:04 time. One second separated senior Kristin Aguilar and freshman Kayden Legan as the senior finished seventh (22:14) with Legan just a step behind (22:15).
Simon Pagenaud went "wire to wire" to claim the victory at the GoPro Sonoma Grand Prix in his Team Penske/Hewlett Packard #22 Chevy this weekend. After capturing his fourth pole qualifying position of the season, Pagenaud dominated the race, leading 76 of the 85 laps in the race over the difficult Sonoma Wine Country road course. With the victory, he also captured the 2016 Verizon Indy Car Season Championship. Entering the event, only his Penske teammate Will Power, also had a chance to claim the season championship.
