2016 NHRA Toyota/Sonoma Nationals Brings Back Memories

It was 10 years ago when a young, local driver from Oakdale claimed the Funny Car title at the Toyota/Sonoma Nationals event. His name was Eric Medlen and he drove a team car for John Force Racing. That same weekend, a friend of his won the event title in Top Fuel. That friend was J.R. Todd. A year later (2007), Medlen lost his life in a testing accident, prior to this event. John Force was able to win the event in 2007, thus defending Medlen's title and helped to raise the spirits of all the fans and ...

Fishing Report

Gone are the days when I used to fish through the summer heat. Call it what you want, "I call it being smart." Rarely have my fishing trips gone past noon this summer. Yesterday for example, I was on the water before 6:30 a.m. and off the water at noon. I was able to catch fish, enjoy the morning, avoid the traffic, and didn't come home feeling completely drained of energy. In the past I would stay out from sunrise to sunset which would usually result in me taking at least a day to recover. My mentality ...

Fishing Report

A lot of anglers make fishing too complicated. To me, this explains how someone with limited experience and skill can catch fish on days where others are struggling to get a bite. The longer I've been fishing, the more I'm starting to realize that I've wasted a lot of time trying to outthink a fish. The first mistake I've made was eliminating areas that didn't look good to me. The major flaw in that type of thinking was that everything that I'm looking at above the water line, the fish don't even see ...

TIGHT LINES

I took a walk in the woods along the Stanislaus River the other day and ran into a small flock of wild turkeys. I have been spotting turkeys there as well as seeing them in the foothills on both sides of the Central Valley for about 20 years and wondered how widespread they were. In checking both online and with experts at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, I have determined that turkeys are actually quite plentiful in the golden state.

Fishing Report

Throughout the years there have been significant changes, improvements, and new inventions that have changed the way we fish. If you were to examine the basic tackle that's been used to catch fish for thousands of years, hook, line, and pole. Two of the three have had significant changes over the years, while the other hasn't changed much in 40,000 years when it was first carved out of bone. If you guessed the "hook," you're right. That's all about to change thanks to Trapper Tackles "Trapper Hook." Former Bassmaster Elite Pro, and local angler Vince ...
