A fifth place finish at the 2016 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters is how the Oakdale girls golf team's season came to an end. Although the team did not qualify to advance to the CIF NorCal Championship, they nonetheless had a memorable season.
Mixed results for the Oakdale Stampede in the 2016 Cencal Playoffs this past weekend. For both the varsity and junior varsity football teams, it was a home evening in the first round of the playoffs. Eight teams made the tournament, with four teams from the AFC and four NFC representatives making the cut. For the first time in Oakdale High School's cross country history, both the varsity boys and varsity girls teams have advanced to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Meet. The historic feat was achieved on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Sub-Sections at Frogtown in Angels Camp.
2016 was a roller coaster ride for the Oakdale Mustangs varsity football team. It seems like just yesterday Oakdale went to Sonora to face their former league rivals, and came up short to the Wildcats, 27-13. Veteran head coach Trent Merzon, with 17 years at the helm, and his staff did not panic but stayed the course. Oakdale then rattled off big non-league victories over Central Point, Oregon's Crater and went to the Bay Area and defeated Campolindo 28-21. In front of approximately 6,000 fans at The Corral for the 2016 regular season finale against nemesis Central Catholic on Friday night, Nov. 4, the Mustangs gave the home crowd exactly what they wanted – a win.

Finishing the regular season with an 11-3 record, tied for second place in the Valley Oak League, Oakdale's Lady Mustangs tennis team went to compete in the 2016 VOL singles and doubles tournament this past week. The singles traveled to Manteca on Tuesday, Oct. 25. There the undefeated Tay Talamentes took first place. Talamentes has yet to lose in VOL action this season, and she and the Lady Mustangs hosted Patterson in team tourney play on Tuesday, Nov. 1 after The Leader went to press.
Lady Mustang golfers have had a memorable season. The young group that consists of freshmen and sophomores won the Valley Oak League title for the first time in over a decade. On Monday, Oct. 24 the girls packed up their clubs and headed to Serrano Country Club, in El Dorado Hills. The girls played 18 holes and competed in the 2016 Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Tournament. As a team, Oakdale shot 462 for a second place finish. Oakdale's cross country teams competed at Eagal Lakes in Tracy this past week in the Valley Oak League (VOL) Cross Country Championship meet. The six Oakdale teams combined for four second place finishes, a fourth place finish by the junior varsity boys and a championship for the junior varsity girls.
For the third consecutive year, the Oakdale Lady Mustangs have clinched the Valley Oak League title. Oakdale defeated Central Catholic on the road in four sets (25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21) on Monday, Oct. 24. Oakdale then welcomed Lathrop to town on Wednesday night, Oct. 26 for Senior Night 2016. With a packed gym the Lady Mustangs honored their five seniors, and then won their third Valley Oak League title in as many years, knocking off Lathrop in three sets (25-15, 25-19, 25-9).
The Oakdale Mustangs (7-2, 5-1) traveled to Manteca (8-1, 5-1) to take on the Buffaloes in a battle of two Valley Oak League powerhouses. Oakdale went into Manteca winners of seven straight games but fell behind early and could not pull off the late fourth quarter rally, as Oakdale fell to Manteca 30-22 on Friday night, Oct. 28.
The 16th annual Toyota NHRA Nationals at the Lasa Vegas Motor Speedway (commonly known as the "Strip") is the next to last event of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag racing Series season and the fourth of the six events in the final countdown to the championship.

The season will continue into the postseason for both the Oakdale Stampede varsity and junior varsity teams. On Saturday, Oct. 28 the boys headed to Modesto to clash with the Broncos. A pair of convincing road wins punched the Stampede playoff tickets. The varsity boys defeated Modesto 46-6 and the junior varsity shut out Modesto 48-0.
