Top Sports Summed Up For 2016 Second Half

During the summer of 2016 local resident sports figures displayed their talents nationwide. From Ultimate Fighter Michael "Mayday" McDonald, to body builder J.R. Dahm, to high school baseball standout Bryce Kirk, and to the Mustangs football team claiming a state championship, all were well-represented on larger stages. In this look back from July to December, we remember the events that made the summer sizzle, the fall memorable and the winter a wondrous time for sports fans.

A Look Back For The Sports Community

In what was a fascinating 2016 for the Oakdale sports community, it is hard to choose a select few. In this week's edition, we will have a recap of the sports events and moments that took place in the first half of the year. In the six month span, Oakdale experienced the celebration of the 65th annual Oakdale Rodeo, hard hitting MMA action and Mustang achievements on the field, in the pool, on the track and on the mat.

Mustang Wrestlers Head To Pennsylvania Tourney

No rest for the Oakdale wrestling team during the winter break. The highly accomplished grapplers competed in the Mike Tamana Invite at Modesto Junior College on Wednesday, Dec. 21. With just four days rest from their Zinkin Classic at Buchanan High School, six Mustangs earned championships at Wednesday's event. Dustin Chavez (120), Jake Abeyta (126), Gabe Martinez (160), Abel Garcia, Bronson Harmon (170) and Colbey Harlan (182) all claimed championships that afternoon.

League Honors Awarded To Football Mustangs

With the 2016 football season in the books, the coaches met up for the annual Valley Oak League honors selection. This meeting took place prior to the Mustangs winning the 2016 CIF Division 3A State Bowl.

Boys Hoop It Up Over The Holidays

For nearly five decades, the Oakdale varsity and junior varsity boys have hosted the Oakdale Rotary Classic during Christmas week. The three-day tournament kicked off on Wednesday, Dec. 21 and wrapped up on Friday night, Dec. 23. Oakdale welcomed seven other schools to take part in the tournament.

Winter meeting have begun at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section headquarters and on Wednesday, Dec. 14 the first of what is likely to be many realignment meetings took place in Lodi. Members of the CIF SJS Realignment Committee met and discussed the future of each of the divisions and leagues for the schools' 2018-2022 realignment options.

Varsity Girls Win Two On Hoops Hardwood

Second year head coach Julie Ford has her girls basketball team off to a sizzling start in the early going. The varsity Lady Mustangs improved to 6-1 following a pair of home wins this past week. On Thursday night the girls dismissed visiting Ripon Christian 41-28 and 24 hours later they demolished Johansen 56-15 to complete their week. The Mustangs opened the first quarter on a 7-0 advantage over Ripon Christian as Sarah Bohrer connected on a corner three with 4:28 left in the opening quarter. Mustangs Win And Tie To Start VOL Campaign

The Valley Oak League soccer season has begun and for the varsity Mustang boys, the season has started with both ups and downs. On Monday, Dec. 12 the boys won the season opener 3-0 over the Manteca Buffaloes. Two days later, the boys tied with East Union, 1-1.

Wrestling Mustangs Take Fifth At Zinkin Classic

The Oakdale varsity wrestling team made the trip to Buchanan High School for a two-day tournament that began on Friday, Dec. 16 and wrapped up on Saturday afternoon. Oakdale, coming off their hot performance at the 41st annual James Riddle, hit a speed bump at the Zinkin Classic as the team placed fifth overall in the tough competition. Oakdale scored a combined 127 team points.
