Amateur Athletic Union Boys Youth basketball tryouts are being held at OHS this week. Coach Hondo Arpoika is seeking fifth and sixth grade boys to participate in the two-day tournament in Turlock. The tournament will be held April 7 and 8 in Turlock.
The 2017 Valley Oak League softball season got underway for Oakdale's Lady Mustangs this past week, though it was delayed by 24 hours. Originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 22, Oakdale's home game against Kimball was postponed that day due to rainy weather. When the girls took the field on Thursday, Oakdale jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and behind lights out pitching by Grace Green, Oakdale held on for a 2-0 home win. Green pitched seven strong innings, giving up just two hits and no walks.
It was the end of an era on Thursday, March 23 inside The Corral at Oakdale High School. The varsity girls – who had won 88 straight Valley Oak League track and field meets – lost to visiting Kimball, falling by a 69-67 final.
The Modesto Nuts, Class A Advanced affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, and Huff Construction Company, Inc. present Kids Run the Stadium at John Thurman Field on Friday, May 26. Kids ages 6-14 will have the opportunity to run John Thurman Field by shadowing and assisting game day employees at different occupational areas throughout the stadium.

For the second year, Oakdale Cheer Boosters and the Oakdale High Cheer program put on a successful cheer skills clinic for sixth, seventh and eighth graders just prior to try-outs for the junior high or high school cheer programs. The skills clinic, hosted Tuesday and Wednesday, March 14 and 15, was put on by the seniors as a fundraiser and an opportunity to teach important skill sets to those wanting to learn. Oakdale High senior Madison 'Maddie' Abell, in front, was among the several varsity cheerleaders who volunteered to teach at the clinic.
I finally get a break in my work schedule and guess what, the rain is back! I'm also coming down with the flu that's going around. I just can't seem to catch a break. Spring may have just sprung, however it is time for Stampede Football open registration on Tuesday, March 28. All players who want to register for the upcoming youth football season can do so at the Oakdale Junior High School Cafeteria at 6 p.m. New players must provide a birth certificate.
The inaugural season for the Oakdale Soccer Club gets underway in September but officials with the new Oakdale youth program are already hard at work. With signs popping up around town, and planning underway, board members are prepping for the season.
