Shorthanded Lady Mustangs Drop Two Of Three

Injuries to numerous players left the varsity Lady Mustangs basketball team shorthanded in a trio of league games this past week. The squad was without Zoe Gillen and Maddy Brewer in a 38-26 home loss to Sierra on Tuesday, Jan. 31. Oakdale shook off the loss and answered with a 56-49 road win over Weston Ranch on Thursday, Feb. 2. Over the weekend the girls hosted Lathrop on Saturday but could not earn the home win as they fell 44-36 to the visiting Spartans.

Mustangs Boy Hoopsters Suffer Tough VOL Losses

Two recent league games for the Oakdale varsity boys' basketball team ended in defeat. Oakdale's (4-21, 1-10) difficult week started with a 46-32 home loss to Weston Ranch (14-10, 6-5) on Wednesday, Feb. 1 and then featured a heartbreaking 45-43 road loss to Kimball (6-18, 2-9) later in the week.

Fishing Report

Freshman Female Phenom Finds Success On Mat

Oakdale High School wrestling is the gold standard for wrestling in the area. They have 10 straight Section Titles to prove it. Oakdale's success is guided by the leadership of the coaching staff led by Steve Strange, and the senior wrestlers each year mentoring the younger wrestlers in the program. This year, one of the new faces to the team is freshman Faalia Martinez.

Lady Mustang Hoopsters Split League Road Games

Oakdale's varsity girls basketball team hit the road this week for a pair of Valley Oak League contests. On Tuesday, Jan. 24 the Lady Mustangs (12-9, 2-6) visited the first place Manteca Buffaloes (11-9, 8-0). Oakdale led 14-13 at the half, but struggled in the second half. Manteca outscored the Lady Mustangs 15-4 in the third quarter and did not let up. Zoe Gillen posted a double-double for Oakdale scoring 10 points and pulling down 10 boards in the loss. Krissy Lolonis also turned in an impressive stat line scoring nine points, eight assists and recording three steals.

Mustang Hoop Boys Win Wild Double OT Home Game

It has been nearly two calendar years since the Oakdale varsity boys basketball team won a Valley Oak League game. Their last league victory came on Feb. 11, 2015 under then-head coach Jeremy Fields. Since the team has gone 0-23 in VOL play; however, that streak came to an end in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night, Jan. 25 with a 69-65 double overtime home win over East Union.

Two Wrestlers Take Top Honors In Gilroy Tourney

Competing in the two day Mid-Cals in Gilroy, the Oakdale Mustang wrestling team took eight of their wrestlers to the Bay Area over the weekend. Out of the eight, senior Abel Garcia and junior Colbey Harlan outdueled the tenacious competition in their respective weight classes. As a team the Mustangs placed fourth overall.

For both the boys and girls Oakdale varsity soccer teams, the winter has not been kind. Both teams suffered a pair of league losses this past week and those losses put their playoff hopes in jeopardy.

Fishing Report

If you've never witnessed a lake being planted with trout, it's definitely a sight to see. The truck that carries the fish usually pulls up to a predetermined spot and either deploys a hose into the water or backs the truck right up to the water's edge. The driver then gets out, opens a valve at the rear or side of the truck, and releases all the fish into the lake. Lady Mustangs Skid Hits Five League Games

Since winning their Valley Oak League season opener on Jan. 4, hard times have followed for the OHS varsity Lady Mustangs basketball team. The girls have lost five straight league games, including two this past week as the squad lost 36-27 at Lathrop on Wednesday, Jan. 18 and fell to visiting Central Catholic 61-55 on Friday night.

Boys Soccer Washed Out

With high winds and rain swirling in Oakdale, the Mustang soccer boys could not take the field. With a short week due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, the boys attempted to take the field on Wednesday against Kimball. Earlier in the day, the junior varsity boys took the field and their game came to a close early as lighting was spotted in the area. Ultimately, that forced both the junior varsity and varsity boys soccer games to be postponed.

Tough Season Continues For Mustang Boy Hoopsters

To say the least, the OHS varsity boys basketball team has had a difficult 2016-17 season. The boys played three games this past week and came up short in all three, stretching their Valley Oak League losing streak to 23. The team last won a league game on Feb. 11, 2015.
