Can Raiders Live up to Hype?

Football fans across the globe can come out of hibernation as football season is officially upon us. For Raider Nation, August and September has been a time for optimism over the last decade. However, this year, the hype has reached past the 510 area code and across the nation. Oakland has not made the postseason since 2003, yet they have been one of the most talked about teams this offseason.

Records Fall At Indianapolis Labor Day Nationals

The 62nd Chevrolet Performance US Nationals took place over the Labor Day Weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana. Track records fell in both Top Fuel and Funny Car, and two $100,000 bonus races also took place during the most prestigious drag race in the world and the final race for racers to get into the countdown for the championship.

Evening Of Remembrance Sets Stage For Football Win

The past is in the past. Last week's varsity football road loss to Sonora made it seem to some like "The sky is falling." But on Friday night, Sept. 2 Oakdale put to rest some concerns around town with a dominating 48-13 home win over the visitors out of Oregon, the Crater High Comets.

JV Colts Squad Falls To Comets

Oakdale's junior varsity football Colts welcomed the Comets of Crater High School this week. The Comets traveled seven-plus hours from Central Point, Oregon and for those who made the trip, they would not be disappointed. Crater topped the Colts 23-13 on Friday night, Sept. 2.

Home, Road Contests Keep OHS Squads Busy

As the calendar turned to September, Oakdale fall athletics turned their attention to Valley Oak League action as well as playing against non-league foes. Many teams were in action this past week; a recap of the contests follows.

Due to the Labor Day holiday, the Stampede games were held following The Leader's holiday deadline. Oakdale's youth squads hosted the Manteca Jaguars on Saturday, Sept. 3. Oakdale travels to Atwater to take on the Buhach Thunder on Saturday, Sept. 10. Football action begins at 1 p.m.

OHS Ponies Saddle Up; Enjoy 2-0 Season Start

Week two of the freshman football campaign on Thursday evening ended with a victory. Oakdale's freshmen, the Ponies, defeated the visiting Los Banos Tigers 34-14 to improve to 2-0. For the second consecutive week; a strong running game, brilliant special teams play and an alert defensive attack helped corral a Ponies victory.

Locals Battle At Global Knockout 7

Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort was the site for Global Knock-Out 7 Saturday night, Aug. 27. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fans were treated to a dozen fights and saw everything from knockouts to tap outs. On the card were three local fighters: Angel "The Dream" DeAnda, Sergio Vazquez and Martin "Tarzan" Sandoval.

Fall Sports Wrap

Preseason contests saw plenty of Oakdale teams in action this week, the Mustang and Lady Mustangs squads hitting the courts, fields and pools for scrimmage play just before the start of the regular season. Here is a brief recap of the action.

Mustangs Varsity, JV Fall To Rival Sonora

For the 100th time, Oakdale and Sonora squared off on the varsity football field. Over the last decade it has been Oakdale walking away with the victory on a Friday night, but this was not the case in the team's season opener. Sonora defended their home field as the Wildcats slashed the Mustangs 27-13 at Dunlavy Field on Aug. 26.

Labor Day Weekend Triathlon Slated In Bear Valley Village

The picturesque setting of Alpine County will be the location of the 24th annual Bear Valley Triathlon. The popular central Sierra Labor Day Weekend tradition will be held on Sunday morning, Sept. 4 (day before Labor Day Monday), at Bear Lake, in Bear Valley Village.

Stampede Scoreboard

Oakdale's youth football and cheer program kicked off this past weekend with the Stampede hosting the Central Valley 49ers. The Stampede made short work of the visitors, as all levels of Oakdale finished the weekend with victories. The Pee-Wee team won in overtime 19-12 on a touchdown run by Maddox Dias. The Junior Varsity boys shut out the 49ers 42-0 under quarterback Mickey Merzon, and a big offensive line anchored by center Bradley Joseph. The offensive line helped open holes for runners Yahir Ayala, Chris Thomas, Tate Cassaretto and Dalton Vargas, who all rushed for touchdowns in the win.
