Mustangs Beat The Heat, Gauchos On Gridiron

Oakdale's home opener Friday night against El Capitan was a hot ticket. This was the first time Oakdale stepped foot on the new look field at The Corral, and it was the first time fans got to welcome back their state championship team. With temperatures reaching triple digits, the game was pushed back to 8 p.m. and by the time stretching was over and the National Anthem was sung, it was closer to 8:40 p.m.

Thursday night the freshman Oakdale Ponies saddled up and headed to Merced to face El Capitan under the lights. Oakdale was not fazed by the road trip and dominated the home team 56-6. Picking up where he left off against Sonora, Zeke Saffar rumbled his way to another big game. Lady Golfers Sink East Union

For nearly a decade, the East Union Lancers golf team dominated the Valley Oak League. However, for the second straight season, Oakdale's Lady Mustangs defeated the Lancers on the golf course. On Thursday afternoon, Aug. 31 Oakdale defeated East Union 215-265. This was Oakdale's Valley Oak League season opener, due to their regular season opener against Kimball having been rescheduled for Sept. 18. In the victory at Oakdale Golf and Country Club Oakdale's Makayla Christiansen shot a team low 40 through nine holes. Madi Blanc shot an impressive 41 while Shealynn Hanrahan shot 42. Also competing for ...

Fishing Report

Boating accidents happen. Surprisingly, 80 percent of all boating fatality victims would have survived if they had been wearing a life jacket. Once an accident occurs, it is often too difficult, and usually too late, to don a life jacket. Imagine trying to put a seatbelt on while in the middle of a crash! Once you're ejected from the boat there's no guarantee that you will be conscious when your body comes to rest in the water. One of the most common complaints about lifejackets is that they're too bulky, or too hot, they now have all ...

Fishing Report

While driving home from Sacramento earlier in the week, my son reminded me of two of my favorite activities that fewer of our youth are participating in now more than ever. Tackle football has shown a big decline in participation over the past ten years for obvious reasons, unfortunately so has fishing. As someone who works with youth daily, I'm amazed at how many of them have never been fishing before. Unfortunately, a lot of kids nowadays would rather sit at home and play an online game than getting out and going fishing. The fishing industry has definitely taken ...

Varsity Football Mustangs Avenge Loss To Sonora

While 2016 was a memorable season for the Oakdale Mustangs varsity football team – ultimately winning the CIF State Championship – the season started off on an alarming 27-13 loss to rival Sonora in the 100th meeting between the two schools. Fast forward to this past Friday night and the Mustangs did more than return the favor; they silenced any doubters that they had during the offseason. Using brilliant blocking by their offensive line, a ruthless running game and a determined defense, the Mustangs walked out of Sonora with a 47-13 road win in hand to kick off the new campaign.
