Thursday, April 7 boys youth basketball tryouts will be held at Oakdale High School's main gym. Oakdale youngsters in fifth and sixth grades are invited to try out for the AAU team. The Oakdale Mustang tennis team remains in the playoff hunt following their 6-3 win over visiting Weston Ranch. Oakdale's match took place under the sun on Friday, March 18 at OHS where the team's doubles came through in the clutch, winning all three matches to help power Oakdale to victory.
In their only game of the week, the Oakdale Lady Mustangs softball squad looked in midseason form in their league opener. Oakdale welcomed Kimball to town on Thursday, March 17 and host Oakdale dominated the Lady Jaguars 15-0 in Valley Oak League (VOL) action.
The annual Mark Dickens Invitational "Hustle for the Future" varsity baseball tournament is scheduled to return on Monday, March 28 and conclude Wednesday, March 30 on the campus of Oakdale High School.
As the varsity baseball boys gear up for Valley Oak League (VOL) play beginning Wednesday, the team hit the road for a pair of non-conference games this past week. Oakdale improved to 3-2 on the road this spring following the successful road trip, earning victories over Bear Creek and Gregori.
Nearly 25 Oakdale High School seniors took on a dozen OHS staff members in a mostly friendly game of basketball in the Mustang Arena on March 9. Fans, friends, and family members packed the gym on Wednesday evening to cheer on the participants in the annual Staff vs. Seniors basketball game, where the final scoreboard indicated a 70-70 tie. That was following some tampering by the seniors, however, as the real score was determined to be 70-44 with the staff coming out on top.
The San Joaquin Rifle and Pistol Range in Linden is an officially recognized Local Qualifying Location for American Marksman – a new concept shooting competition TV show by Outdoor Sportsman Group. Amateur target shooters from Linden and the surrounding area will have the chance to qualify to earn bids to the Southwest Regional Championship and, ultimately for the American Marksman national championship, where they will compete for a grand prize of $50,000 and the title of the very first American Marksman.
Sixteen teams showed up for the 2016 Oakdale Cup tournament, hosted Monday, March 7 at Oakdale Golf and Country Club. Oakdale's boys golf team finished with a total score of 416 and placed third behind Buhach Colony (401) and first place Gregori (389).
Oakdale's varsity softball girls earned a pair of non-league wins this past week. They welcomed Merced to town on Tuesday, March 8 and made short work of the visitors 6-0. Oakdale took their act on the road against Ceres where the girls earned their second shutout of the week as they dismissed Ceres 11-0 on Thursday, March 10.
With the help of the Oakdale High School varsity and junior varsity girls softball teams and coaches, the Oakdale Baseball Softball Association (OBSA) held a clinic for their youth softball players on Saturday, March 12. Oakdale High School usually hosts the clinic on their varsity softball field; however the nearly 200 players made their way to the school's main and small gyms due to weather. The intermittent rainfall and tough field conditions prompted the moving of the clinic to inside for the day.
The sunshine lasted just long enough for Oakdale's varsity baseball boys to compete in the Pedretti Tournament in Turlock this past weekend. Oakdale finished the tournament on a strong note, defeating Lodi 4-1 in their final game of the weekend.
It's been a few years since I stopped fishing bass tournaments. The good news is that I probably ended up saving myself a lot of money; I'm honestly starting to miss it though. Especially this time of year, when some of the bigger tournament circuits start visiting locally. Over the years I've been fortunate to do fairly well while tournament fishing, but I could never quite come to terms with spending upwards of a thousand dollars on an entry fee. Winning of course would pay all of that money back and much more but it's definitely ...
The questionable weather was not enough to keep Oakdale athletes off the court, track or even out of the pool this week. Oakdale's tennis team played two matches in Valley Oak League action. The track team traveled to Kimball for a dual meet and Oakdale swim hosted their annual March Madness Invite on Saturday.
