The sun was shining and temperatures peaked near 80 degrees on Thursday, March 16 as Oakdale hosted Sierra for a Valley Oak League track and field meet. Oakdale's varsity girls won 79-56, the varsity boys fell 76-60, junior varsity girls won 77-46 and junior varsity boys won 75-58.
Hitting the court twice this week, the Oakdale boys tennis team had mixed results. After a 2-0 start in the Valley Oak League, the boys now sit at 3-1 after falling to Kimball 7-2 but bouncing back with a 7-2 home win over Lathrop.
Oakdale's varsity softball team has been busy this preseason. Over the last 10 days the girls have competed in the Saint Mary's tournament, where they finished 2-2, and bounced back with three straight non-league victories to cap off the flurry of contests.
The Pacific Fishery Management Council earlier this month adopted three public review alternatives for the 2017 salmon seasons off the West Coast of the United States. The Council will select a final alternative at their next meeting in Sacramento, California on April 6-11. There's and old saying that goes "someone's always going to catch fish." This is especially true on the Delta. This past weekend seemed like the perfect day to get out fishing, I couldn't have asked for better fishing conditions. On Tuesday, March 14 the Oakdale swim team hosted Manteca and Weston Ranch in their opening meet of the Valley Oak League season. Oakdale's varsity boys defeated Weston Ranch 129-20 but fell to Manteca 130-70. In Lady Mustang action, Oakdale made a strong statement defeating Weston Ranch 136-31 and Manteca 124-46.
The NHRA Heritage Drag Racing Series kicked off at the 59th annual March Meet at the famed Auto Club Famoso Raceway, just north of Bakersfield. The racing wasn't just on the track, but also against the weather. The weather started out good until race day, when the winds, rain and hail came. The race was finally halted on Sunday, with the final rounds in every category being delayed until Monday, March 6.

After nearly two weeks away from the court, the Oakdale High School boys tennis team returned to action. On Wednesday, March 8 the boys hosted Weston Ranch in the Valley Oak League season opener. The Mustangs did not look fazed by the layoff and defeated the visiting Cougars 9-0. In singles action Zack Miller defeated Ian Obiso in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Daniel Lubeck knocked off Yeng Vang 6-0, 6-1. Oakdale's number three singles Isaiah Canchola battled Brendan Lee in the match of the day. As the start of Valley Oak League play approaches for the Oakdale High School baseball teams, the program welcomed in a new coach for the freshman program. A familiar face on the sidelines on Friday nights for the junior varsity football team, Coach Joey Machado has now taken over the reins as head coach of the Mustangs freshman baseball club.
