The 2016-2017 school year at Oakdale High has begun and that means varsity Mustang teams are returning to the practice field, course, gym and pool. The CIF has moved boys soccer from the fall to the winter season and they (along with girls soccer) will join wrestling and basketball at that time. Here is a quick glance at each of the OHS fall sports.

Fish and Game Commission to adopt higher bag limits and lower size limits for black bass and stripers. These changes are aimed to essentially eradicate these species from the Delta, Bay and rivers of the Central Valley. Hot weather didn't keep them away and, on Monday, Aug. 8 nearly 200 golfers teed off for a good cause: to help put an end to Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The Karen Basi Wave of Hope MS Foundation hosted its 11th annual charity golf tournament at Oakdale Golf and Country Club. This year's theme was "Imagine A Future Without MS" with the staff dressed up as science-fiction characters for the theme.
When 'Ei8hts' are just not enough, the fourth annual Crazy Ei8hts Trail Run Series will sign off its final leg with an added half-marathon option, on Sunday, Aug. 28, at Lake Camanche. All will be gathering at the South Shore staging area, and meeting up at the Turkey Hill Equestrian Campground, at 11700 Wade Lane in Wallace.

With football players reporting for practice and their first game slated for Friday, Aug. 26 at Sonora, the team is hosting its annual Oakdale Football Fundraiser and Dinner on Saturday night, Aug. 13. The dinner will be staged at varsity linebackers coach Josh Yarbrough's home on Crow Road. This year's event will be served and catered by Mike's Branding Iron BBQ and include a chicken and steak meal for attendees. The event will also have a no host bar and the dinner is sponsored each year by the Oakdale Quarterback Club.
For the last four years, Rod Long has been on staff at Oakdale High School as a special education teacher. This year, Long will be doing some more teaching after hours on campus, not in a classroom, but on the football field as the new head coach for the Oakdale freshman football team.
Hard hitting Mixed Martial Arts action returns to the Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort on Saturday, Aug. 27. Heading to Jackson will be Last Stand Fight Team member Sergio Vazquez. The Oakdale based Vazquez (4-2) will be taking on Sacramento's Angelo Trevino (2-1) in Welterweight action at Global Knock-Out 7.
Micke Grove Zoological Society Zoo Zoom is a health-driven, family-friendly event that includes a children's fun run, 5K race, games, crafts, award ceremony and a pancake breakfast. It is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18 with check-in and on-site registration from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Early Bird Pre-Registration is being taken until Monday, Sept. 12. Overcast skies and cool weather contributed to several track records in Top Fuel and resetting of the elapse time record twice in Funny Car during weekend competition in Washington State. Unfortunately, the weather also brought an early end to the racing, as rain stopped the action at the end of the semifinal rounds.

Oakdale's youth swim club, the Oakdale Gators recently ended their summer season and on Thursday, July 28 the club held its end of the year awards ceremony. Young swimmers, parents, coaches and fans gathered at Oakdale High School's Aquatic Center that evening to honor all of the swimmers who hit the pool during the summer.
Oakdale's J.R. Dahm competed in the 2016 National Physique Committee (NPC) Junior Master Nationals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 20. Dahm, who advanced to the NPC Junior Master Nationals after taking first in the NPC Junior Master Regionals recently, took seventh in the nation, falling just short of qualifying for his pro card.
Saturday night, Aug. 13 John Thurman Field will transform from the home of the Modesto Nuts to the squared circle of Big Time Wrestling (BTW). For the first time in its 20-year history, BTW is coming to Modesto.
