Several members of the Mustang varsity basketball squad could justly claim rights to Athlete of the Week honors after terrific performances during Oakdale's host Rotary Tournament. Despite one of them being recognized for All Tournament production, the entire cast deserves this week's nod from The Leader after a thrilling effort in front of home fans. The team won three of their last four games of the preseason and bested a solid Grace Davis squad 42-36 to capture third place status in their own tourney during the holiday break from school.

Oakdale High's lanky guard/forward, Kylie Gust, is the Dirk Nowitzki of Lady Mustang hoops. Her exploits were a bright spot during the OHS girls basketball program in the 2011-12 season and she has already made a big impact this year. She drained two threes and landed a team-high eight points as Oakdale rallied to a 37-23 win over LeGrand on Thursday as the varsity girls captured their second win of the season. Gust will be a key factor in Oakdale's success moving forward this season.
