Opening Day finally arrived. Now all the trout fishing fanatics can get out there and beat the water to a froth in seek of their quarry. While the state sets the official date, I learned long ago that opening day is really set by The Good Lord. In wet years when there is a huge snow pack the real opening day may well be the middle of June, while in drought years the first of May might be a realistic opening date. In any event, trout season has begun and we can begin our search for our wary quarry in ...
Records are meant to be broken. This past weekend, five Oakdale High School varsity boys school swimming records were broken and new ones set at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships. Seniors Nate Van Cleave and Rhett Harrison teamed with Jackson Metcalfe and Caden Nord to make school history and advanced to the CIF State Meet with their record-breaking performance at Tokay High School.
"Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after." (Henry David Thoreau) The longer that I've been fishing the more this quote has meant to me. Fishing has and will always be something that I seem to value more as time passes. I was reminded of this by my son last year. He asked to go fishing with me only. Our previous trips were with a friend or two. Admittedly, he's not as obsessed with fishing as I was at his age but he was obviously interested in spending ...
The Oakdale varsity girls finished the 2016 season the same way they began it; on top. For over a decade, the varsity girls track and field team at Oakdale has dominated the Valley Oak League. On Saturday, May 7 the varsity girls placed first at the VOL Championships at Sierra High School in Manteca. Seven teams could not slow down the powerhouse program, as Oakdale's ladies scored a team total of 130 points. Kimball, with 104 points, came in second.
Freshman Lexi Webb was named the starting pitcher of the Oakdale varsity softball game, but it was the seniors who were front and center. Seniors Scarlett Brock, Kindra Hackbarth, Maddi Hackbarth, Cierra Duke, Emily Greenwood, Emery Sipe and Haley Fuller were all honored in an emotional pregame ceremony full of tears, laughs and decorations for Senior Day 2016.
The Oakdale Mustangs boys golf team turned in an impressive performance at the 2016 VOL Championship Tournament. The Mustangs, along with seven other teams in the Valley Oak League, traveled to Copperopolis for 18 holes at Saddle Creek Golf Course.
Monday night, May 2 was an emotional rollercoaster for the Oakdale High School varsity soccer girls. Prior to the team's must win game against visiting East Union, 10 senior Lady Mustangs were honored in the Senior Night 2016 pregame festivities. The hits, and wins, just keep coming for the Oakdale varsity Mustangs baseball team. Oakdale (17-6, 8-3) extended their impressive winning streak to eight after knocking off Central Catholic (13-10, 7-4) by a 4-1 final on Wednesday, May 4. This is the longest winning streak since the 2014 season when the team had won six straight league games.
Oakdale High School senior Trevor Williams is well known for his wrestling abilities. The senior is a four time CIF State Championship qualifier, and though his prep season and high school career may have ended earlier this year, Williams still hits the mats hard.
There's an old saying that "one man's junk is another man's treasure." What I've learned over the years of accumulating fishing tackle is that the saying is definitely true when it comes to fishing equipment. I recently parted with some fishing rods that I no longer use. I had actually forgotten that I had them until a friend called me and asked whether or not I had any fishing rods that I would be willing to sell. It was nice getting a little of the money back that I had spent on the rods and at ...
