Mustang Girls Begin Water Polo Playoffs Saturday

A 9-5 victory over Sonora High on Oct. 24 clinched a third straight undefeated conference championship for Oakdale's girls water polo team, which now has Capital Valley Conference No. 3 seed Del Campo on their radar in the first round of the postseason.

Mustang Girls Win VOL, Boys Cling To Hope

Today's Oct. 24 water polo showdown between Oakdale High and host Sonora couldn't be much bigger. For the Oakdale girls, it's a chance to cap an unbeaten league season and high seed heading into the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs. For the Oakdale boys, it's a chance to flip a coin. Since the boys fell to Ripon twice and Sonora during the first half, Oakdale needs an upset win to force a tie for second and coin-flip to decide the final seed into the postseason.

Athlete of the Week - Varsity Volleyball

A terrific fifth game awarded Oakdale High's varsity volleyball team perhaps the biggest win of the fall season for any OHS team when they toppled previously unbeaten Sonora on Oct. 3. The 3-2 win is a near lock for at least co-Valley Oak League championship honors, as Oakdale has defeated every other conference opponent by a 3-0 shutout.

Athlete of the Week - Varsity Boys Basketball

Several members of the Mustang varsity basketball squad could justly claim rights to Athlete of the Week honors after terrific performances during Oakdale's host Rotary Tournament. Despite one of them being recognized for All Tournament production, the entire cast deserves this week's nod from The Leader after a thrilling effort in front of home fans. The team won three of their last four games of the preseason and bested a solid Grace Davis squad 42-36 to capture third place status in their own tourney during the holiday break from school.

Oakdale High's lanky guard/forward, Kylie Gust, is the Dirk Nowitzki of Lady Mustang hoops. Her exploits were a bright spot during the OHS girls basketball program in the 2011-12 season and she has already made a big impact this year. She drained two threes and landed a team-high eight points as Oakdale rallied to a 37-23 win over LeGrand on Thursday as the varsity girls captured their second win of the season. Gust will be a key factor in Oakdale's success moving forward this season.
