Varsity Mustangs Fall To Summerville

The Oakdale varsity Mustangs boys basketball team may be 0-3 and struggling early this season, but the team has had its bright moments. On the positive side, for the first time since camp opened, first-year head coach Hondo Arpoika has enough players on his roster to run a full five-on-five practice, as numerous fall sports athletes recently made their 2015 basketball debut.

HARD HITTING

Oakdale's competitive Under 19 Insanity soccer girls kicked off their winter season with a hard fought 1-1 tie against Sacramento on Saturday at T.L. Davis sports complex. Here, Logan Laugero corrals the ball and keeps her opponent at bay during second half action. Both goals came in the second half, Oakdale taking the lead on a Vanessa Kualapai goal, Sacramento getting the equalizer and the teams settling for the 1-1 draw.

Winter Sports Means Wrestling In Oakdale

Oakdale High School athletes excel at many sports. From football, which has made it to the CIF Section Championship game in back-to-back years, to the baseball program that won seven straight Valley Oak League titles in recent years, and the varsity girls track and field team, who literally ran away from the competition over the past decade. All very impressive, but the OHS varsity wrestling team has carved its own place in school history, putting a headlock on the competition, not only in the Valley Oak League, but on the entire Sac-Joaquin Section.

End Of The Trail For Football Mustangs

Unlike the Nov. 6 barnburner that totaled 79 points between them, Friday night's CIF Section Championship Game between Oakdale and Central Catholic proved to be an offensive struggle. At night's end, it was Central Catholic hoisting the much sought after blue banner, following a 21-7 victory at Lincoln High School of Stockton in the DIII title contest.

Fishing Report

For as many times that I've been fishing, one would think that I've pretty much seen it all when it came to launching a boat. Last weekend I saw something that I still can't believe ever happened. As I backed my trailer into the water to retrieve my boat, I watched as another boat drove right up onto my trailer as if it was his trailer. In disbelief, I walked over to him and said "that's my trailer." He did a double take, apologized, and backed his boat off of my trailer. On the positive side ...

Fishing Report

Recently while out fishing with a friend we talked about fishing equipment and purchasing new equipment. Like most things, as time has passed, improvements have been made and top of the line gear is now twice as expensive as it was ten years ago. I have a few friends that have to have the latest and greatest and honestly I'm not sure how they can afford it. I'm the type that will use something until it's no longer serviceable. In fact, I've got a few reels in my boat right now that are over 20 years ...

Arpoika Takes On Challenge Of Coaching OHS Hoops

A familiar face around Oakdale High School, takes on an unfamiliar role this winter. Former football and baseball coach Hondo Arpoika will be patrolling the sidelines indoors as the new varsity boys basketball coach. Arpoika will replace Jeremy Fields, who was the coach of the Mustangs since 2007. Fields finished his hardwood tenure with a league record of 29-68.

In front of nearly 3,000 day-after-Thanksgiving fans, the Mustangs added another layer to that feeling of thankfulness, as they outlasted the Tigers 51-38 in the semifinals shootout.

SOCCER SUCCESS

An end-of-season tournament in Stockton featuring the top rec soccer squads from throughout the area saw two Oakdale teams come home with hardware earlier this month. Top photo, the Under 10 Oakdale Mustang boys went 4-0 in the District VIII rec season tournament finale, claiming first place honors. They were coached by Seth Burford with assistant Vanessa Walton. The young Mustangs beat a team from Manteca 4-2 for the championship. "If you won your league or did well, you went to represent the town," said Coach Burford. "We won the league in Oakdale so we went, there were 11 teams ...
