SavetheStan: A Life Or Death Fight

Both the South San Joaquin and the Oakdale Irrigation Districts are in a fight for their lives against the federal government's misguided attempts at helping salmon and steelhead in the South Delta. Our two agencies have filed suit to stop the same government decision that shut the pumps down on the westside of the Central Valley and destroyed much of its agriculture and economy last year. That same decision (known as the Biological Opinion), if not changed, will do the same here on the Stanislaus River; significantly impacting our local communities.

The feds and their state counterparts are focused ...

Dawn’s Column - On To Something ‘Big’

A couple years ago around this time, I wrote a column about going to see the Sex And The City movie on opening night. I drove three hours to meet up with one of my partner-in-crime girlfriends from college and some of her girlfriends who held a 'Big' bash, complete with cosmopolitans (and champagne and kamikazes and…) and a limo to drive all 10 of us to the theater. It was memorable.

River Safety Cautioned

The temperatures are climbing quickly into the 'is it summer already?' zone and Oakdale is lucky to have the cool, crisp waters of the Stanislaus River winding its way through the zip code. However, officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are quick to remind people that the river is running swift from high country snow run-off and cold with brisk temperatures between 55 and 60 degrees.

Cooler than normal spring weather brought late season snow to the mountains, delaying the annual melting by about three weeks, according to reports by the National Weather Service in Sacramento.
