CONGRESSIONAL HONOR

Oakdale High School's Sophia Hill is shown with Congressman Jeff Denham. Hill was recently named a 2016-17 Congressional Merit Award winner for California's 10th Congressional District. She was nominated by OHS Principal Mike Moore based on her GPA, leadership, school citizenship, volunteerism, community service and extracurricular activities.

Valley Home News

Sad news in Valley Home with the passing of a most caring man, Mr. Harold Pope. Mr. Pope left this world to be with the angels on October 31st. He was fondly known as the teacher/principal who gave his all to Valley Home. His wonderful life was blessed with daughters Sandy Mercer, Barbara Aker and son Keith Pope and the late Cheryl Hayes. He was a devoted grandfather to eight grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Knights Ferry News

The Halloween parade was great. The town folks turned out with their bags of candy and the children trooped down the hill to collect. A lot of cute costumes this year. The Pumpkin Decorating was awesome. The students come up with some great ideas. This year's winners were: First Place - a black widow spider done by Olivia Doshas, River McCarthy, Nadia Lau-Vargas, Taylor Witzke and Everett Holtsman. Second Place was the pig zombie done by Jude Krick, Julian Arias, Cole Schlicht and Malia Olivo. Third Place was popcorn done by Annabel Lee, Gracie Anderson and Gibran Valladares.

4-H FUN

Members of the Orange Blossom 4-H were busy at the Knights Ferry Pumpkin Roll on Sunday, hosting a face painting booth along with games including bean bag toss, fishing booth, mini golf and they also had petting zoo and photo booth. Here, the 4-Hers help out a number of visitors to their fun activities.

Modesto Man Booked For Attempted Murder

Oakdale Police Department investigators continue to follow up on the early morning Oct. 31 shooting in the 300 block of South Third Avenue that sent a 20-year-old male to an area hospital for non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

Hunter Education Programs

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's (CDFW) Advanced Hunter Education Program has begun to schedule its clinics for 2017. So far, next year's roster includes Wilderness First Aid, Wild Turkey Hunting, Deer Hunting, Big Game Packing and Land Navigation. Some spaces are also still available for the few remaining 2016 clinics (Wild Game Cooking, Waterfowl Hunting, Wilderness First Aid and Wild Pig Hunting).

Pump Prices Steady For California Drivers

Average retail gasoline prices in Modesto have not moved in the past week, averaging $2.56/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 201 gas outlets in Modesto. This compares with the national average that has increased 0.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.21/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Weekend Ferry Festival Celebrates Chinook Salmon

Come November, the view from the Knights Ferry Bridge is sure to include Chinook salmon during the peak of their migration. It is this time of year that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, East Stanislaus Resource Conservation District, FISHBIO, and other local partners come together to celebrate the annual Stanislaus River Salmon Festival. The sixth annual event will be held in Knights Ferry at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Stanislaus River Park on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
