File Of Life Enrollment Draws Seniors

It was a successful day, Wednesday, Aug. 12, when CAPS (Citizen Auxiliary Police Services) members went to the Senior Center to sign up those interested in the File Of Life program, currently facilitated by the Senior Outreach.
According to Ann Farmer, Senior Outreach Coordinator, the day was well worth the effort as 120 seniors were signed up for the program that helps first responders find the appropriate medical information for elderly patients.
File Of Life, similar to the Vial Of Life, is a personal home medical file slip prepared for emergency first responders that includes current medicine dosages that slide ...

National Night Out Brings Neighbors Together

Following last year's blueprint, the City of Oakdale hosted three park parties in celebration of the Tuesday, Aug. 4 National Night Out event with varying levels of success.
The parties, which offered free hot dogs, chips and a drink, were made possible by generous donations given by local businesses but while some parties, such as the one at Dorada Park were subdued, another, such as the party at Shire Park in Bridle Ridge was rocking and rolling - literally - as entertainment was top of the list.
Oakdale City firefighters were manning the grill at Dorada Park while the antique fire ...

Cops Remind Motorists Of Cell Laws

It's a bad habit and against the law - cell phone use while driving -†and local law enforcement officials are cracking down in the form of citations.
Since the law went into effect last July, Oakdale City Police officers gave out 808 citations to adults and juveniles, with an average of 67 per month or two per day.
"The numbers have gone down in the last few weeks but I don't think that's a trend or anything," Traffic Officer Ben Savage said of the decline, saying there are some out there, particularly tourists, who aren't even aware ...

Reporter’s Notebook – A Perk, If You Will

In this day and age there are precious few perks to be found in this business so I always make it a point to attend the Media Day offered at the Stanislaus County Fair the day prior to opening for the public. In the six years since I've been with The Leader, I've only missed it twice (once because I was on bedrest during my last pregnancy, and another when I went to Georgia for my first RWA conference).
This year it was smashing good fun (as it always is) and I'm happy to share the experience ...

Healthy Pond Keeps Water Clean, Fish Happy

For those who like the thought of a gurgling pond, filled with pretty koi and floating lily pads in their backyard, Don Bradley, owner of Healthy Pond, is the man you should pencil into your calendar first.
Bradley moved to Oakdale and started his new business after his job with Georgia Pacific was downsized after 30 years of employment. Wary of just doing nothing, he turned what had been a relaxing hobby for the past 20 years into a business venture and he hasn't regretted that decision yet.
"For years I used to help out friends and family with ...

ORFD Deputy Chief Ready For Change

Five years ago, a young captain with years of tactical experience and a solid head on his shoulders was tapped, along with a then-administrative secretary, to assume the helm of the Oakdale Rural Fire District upon the retirement of long-time chief Bill Houk.

It was a temporary measure aimed at saving the beleaguered district much-needed cash until a fire initiative could be passed for an infusion of additional funds.

Going To National

By the time you read this I'll have returned from my business trip but as I'm writing ahead of schedule, I haven't left yet. It's kind of like writing about the future!
So, each year, I go to the Romance Writers of America national conference and each year I run around like a chicken with its head cut off because I'm not prepared.
You'd think that with a year to prepare I'd be ready to go but you see, that's not in my personality. I'm the kind of girl who likes ...
