FLAG PROJECT PREP

In advance of placing American flags throughout the community for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday observance on Monday, Jan. 16, Oakdale Lions Club members Alan Turner, left, and Don Lee vacuumed out and prepared the post holes on Saturday morning, Jan. 14. Lee is the project chairman and said there are specific routes that the Lions Club has for flag placement on holidays; with 340 total flags placed, along East F, West F and an area encompassing First, Second and Third streets as well as North and South Yosemite avenues.

HOLIDAY PARADE

Though the weather was, literally, freezing, the annual Holiday Light Parade went off as scheduled Saturday evening in Valley Home. Scott Sachau, left, 5; Audie Beltrami, 1; and 18-month-old Emmit Caudle wheeled their wagon in to bring hot chocolate and candy canes to warm the hearts of parade watchers. Santa and Mrs. Claus waved to the crowd from their spot in the parade. The evening also featured a potluck dinner, the lighting of the community Christmas tree and the singing of carols in front of a live Nativity scene in the community park

Mustangs Crowned State Champions

In their final game of the year, the Oakdale varsity football Mustangs got their biggest win ever – claiming the Division 3A State Championship in a 47-0 thrashing of Bishop's of La Jolla.

Downtown Christmas Ushers In Festive Holiday Season

Oakdale residents and many from neighboring communities took advantage of the opportunity to officially welcome in the holiday season on Saturday. A portion of North Third Avenue was closed off to vehicle traffic, set up with vendor booths, food, music, horse drawn wagon rides and more, as part of the city's Downtown Christmas celebration. Later on, Santa continued the festivities at Oakdale in Wonderland for an evening of fun.

Shoeboxes Bring Gifts To Brighten Holidays

With donations coming in from Oakdale and the surrounding areas, over 680 shoeboxes were collected locally for children across the country and around the world through Operation Christmas Child. The 682 total boxes gathered at The River Christian Community on East G Street, which served as the collection center in town, will now head off on a journey to Southern California. They will go to Irvine for checking and processing, and from there will start the journey to needy children both in the U.S. and abroad.

Denham Poised To Return To Congress

Results from the Stanislaus County Registrar of Voters office early Wednesday showed incumbent Congressman Jeff Denham appearing poised for reelection in the 10th Congressional District, receiving 53 percent of the vote in Stanislaus County, 51 percent in San Joaquin County, with challenger Michael Eggman receiving 49 percent of the vote in San Joaquin and 47 percent in Stanislaus.
