Roaring 20's Party Supports Museum

Friends of Oakdale Heritage will be recreating the fun and excitement of an old-fashioned speakeasy this Saturday night with their roaring '20s casino night, "Naughty Night Out." Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Oakdale Museum and History Center.

Council Formalizes Fire Services Merger

Members of the Oakdale City Council formally approved a contract at their Monday night meeting that will merge the headquarters of Oakdale Rural Fire Protection District, City of Oakdale Fire Department and Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District. The merged headquarters provides one fire chief from the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District to oversee all three agencies. The merge is expected to happen by June of this year.

Stanislaus County Library Tax Fate Hangs In Balance

Oakdale voters will have the opportunity this June to decide the fate of their public library. The Oakdale branch of the Stanislaus County Library is funded in part by a one-eighth cent sales tax collected throughout Stanislaus County. The tax accounts for 84 percent of the Stanislaus County Library funding, and it is set to expire in 2013. The sales tax will be on the ballot in the June 5, 2012 Primary Election.

Pilots Adjust Pattern

Oakdale airport-bound pilots are rethinking their flight paths in the interest of public safety and comfort. Air traffic has been re-directed away from the air space above Sierra View Elementary School after community complaints that the planes were flying too low.

State Of The City Outlined By Mayor

Oakdale Mayor Pat Paul took her audience on a trip through the last year of Oakdale history with her State of the City address on Jan. 25. She gave the address to a crowd of more than 100 business owners, city staff and other Oakdale community leaders and residents at a luncheon hosted by the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce.

RDA Payback List Finalized

The Oakdale Redevelopment Agency met for the last time on Monday to finalize an EOPS, Enforceable Obligations Payment Schedule. The EOPS is a list of all RDA debt that will need to be repaid under the guidance of the RDA's successor agency. Also included on the list were planned RDA projects that have not yet broken ground. Interim City Manager Gregory Wellman said that each item on the list was already intended to use RDA funds.

Chamber Responds To Council Allegations

Oakdale Chamber of Commerce president Chris Elswick has released an official response to the Oakdale City Council's discussion of the Oakdale Tourism and Business Improvement District. The discussion took place at council's Jan. 17 meeting, where members spent over 45 minutes discussing the BID and hearing public comment on the question of possible wrongdoing before deciding to hold off making a decision on the issue until a future meeting.

Council Has Marathon Meeting After Holidays

Oakdale City Council recovered from city holiday shut-downs with a heavier than usual agenda on Jan. 17. The meeting was held on a Tuesday, rather than the regular Monday, because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. It was their second meeting of the month, but the previous meeting had just one agenda item.

Future Shaky - Business Improvement District Fate Uncertain

The fate of Oakdale's Business Improvement District is still unknown after the Oakdale City Council decided to delay its decision on the BID for one month. The council spent over 45 minutes discussing the BID and hearing public comment on the question of possible wrongdoing before deciding to hold off making a decision on the issue until a future meeting. The business owners involved in the BID were asked to sign a letter of support of the organization, and council will re-visit the discussion at a future meeting.

Planners Stay Active

The Oakdale Planning Commission is waiting for the adoption of a new Oakdale General Plan to make many changes, but are not sitting idle in the meantime. Scot Hicks, chair of the commission, addressed the Oakdale City Council on Jan. 17 regarding the commission's recent activities.

Company Mobilizes To Aid Family

Team Depot, a volunteer program for Home Depot employees, is making a difference across the Central Valley. Team members from Sacramento to Turlock volunteer their time to work on construction projects that give back to their community. Team Depot's latest project brought them to Oakdale, where they helped a local family regain independence in their own home.

The Reluctant Columnist - Here’s To Our Health

Fitness seems to a reoccurring theme in my life lately. Our group of newspapers, Oakdale, Riverbank and Escalon, has decided to introduce a monthly health and fitness section, which means I will be writing health and fitness stories at least once a month. Our office is also participating in a 100 miles in 100 days challenge, so I have been trying to walk or bike at least a mile a day. Add in all of the New Year's resolution talk, and I've had just about all the fitness I can stand.

City Council Had Full Agenda

The Oakdale City Council had a packed agenda on Tuesday night. The previous meeting, on Jan. 3, had only one item on the agenda due to the city's limited holiday hours. The Jan. 17 meeting, however, picked up the slack with more action items than usual before the council.

January is a busy time for the Alzheimer's Association. They receive an increased number of calls from concerned family members who noticed a change in a loved one during holiday visits. For some families, the holidays are the only time they see elderly relatives. Those visits can be a challenge for children, grandchildren and other family members who see personality changes in their loved one.
