Oakdale High School junior Sabrina Franciosa was chosen the recipient of the title of Distinguished Young Woman, passed on to her from OHS senior and current Distinguished Young Woman Janki Mistry. The annual Distinguished Young Women of Oakdale program was hosted Saturday, Feb. 9 at Magnolia School Auditorium.

In addition to the $2,500 scholarship for the title award, Franciosa received two $200 scholarships in the Scholastics and Spirit categories. Scholarship awards were also presented to Valerie Zemlyanskaya, second place; Taylor Kelley, third place; Hannah Butler, fourth place; and Makayla Hauser, fifth place. Hauser also received a $200 scholarship in the Self Expression category. Mary Williams received two $200 scholarships in the Talent and Community Service categories. In addition, Elizabeth Nielsen received a $200 scholarship in the Fitness category and Serilla Chavez received a $200 scholarship in the Interview category. Other participants included Alyssa Perigen and Sylvana Talamantes.

The event marked the silver anniversary for Soroptimist International of Oakdale as the sponsor of the Distinguished Young Women of Oakdale program. Distinguished Young Women, formerly Junior Miss, is a national scholarship program that recognizes, rewards, and encourages excellence in young women. The program’s mission is to positively impact the lives of young women by providing a transformative experience that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership, and individual talents.

Franciosa will represent Oakdale at California’s Distinguished Young Women program July 19-28, 2013 in Bakersfield for an opportunity to earn additional scholarship awards.

A total of $6,750 in scholarships were awarded at the Oakdale event from donations received from the Oakdale Lions and Rotary Clubs, Oak Valley Community Bank, Fran Krieger/Farmer’s Insurance, Century 21 M&M Realty, Tim and Elaine McConnell, Dr. Chet and Parnima Mahida, Dr. A. Lee Scaief, Drs. Jeff and Jodi Sceville, Valley First Credit Union, and Yogurt Station.
