POSTED January 8, 2013 11:00 p.m.

Edith Evelyn (Cole) Hawkins, 100, recently of Stayton, Oregon, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012.

She was born in Knights Ferry on April 16, 1912 to Eady Edward Cole and Katherine Elizabeth (Meyers) Cole.

She married the love of her life, Lawrence Everett Hawkins on May 25, 1931.

She came from a long line of Cole, Kelley, Hoffman, and Meyers ancestors who settled Stanislaus County as early as the gold rush. Her mother and her grandmother Christina Hoffman were also born in Knights Ferry. She grew up in Oakdale, where she remained until she married her husband, who was also an Oakdale High School graduate.

She and her husband lived in Berkeley for about 28 years where he taught school. They retired to Watsonville, where they lived until moving to Oregon in 1994.

Mrs. Hawkins was a devoted mother, a stay-at-home mom for her entire life. She loved crafts, and dabbled at painting, but loved decorating egg shells for her Easter and Christmas trees. In her younger years she sewed frequently, making clothes for family members. Her children remember the matching shirts they all had to wear during vacation. She loved to knit baby blankets, booties and hats for grandchildren until her arthritic hands no longer allowed her to do so. She loved her flower gardens, and was always thrilled with the new blooms of the season.

She is survived by her children, Miriam (Hamilton) Brannan of Crestone, Colo., Chuck (Glenda) Hawkins of Aumsville, Ore., Gerri Hawkins of Stayton, Ore.; 15 grandchildren; at least 44 great-grandchildren; and more than 35 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 68 years, Lawrence Hawkins in 2000; and son, Lawrence E. ‘Skip’ (Joan) Hawkins of Bloomington, Indiana in 2012.

She will be buried in Lone Oak Cemetery, Stayton, Ore., with her husband.
