Fall Sports Wrap - Oakdale Mustang Squads Win Some, Lose Some

POSTED October 10, 2012 12:44 a.m.

Following are results of recent Valley Oak League action from Oakdale water polo, girls tennis and boys soccer.

Water Polo

The varsity girls stayed atop the VOL standings with a key 6-4 victory over second place Sonora on Oct. 4. Shelby Stender scored twice while Cassie Lee, Jill Kahler, Katie Vanderburg and Hannah Hanko all found the net. Hayley Benson landed 10 saves in the win.

Oakdale had slipped 7-4 to Rio Americano earlier in the week. Rio was the same team Oakdale bested in last year’s Division II Sac-Joaquin Section semifinal. Since section champion, Del Oro, are in Division I now, Rio is a likely opponent for Oakdale, should they repeat as section finalists in 2012.

“I was very excited to add a non-conference game with Rio Americano this year,” Oakdale coach Dine Kline said. “They are a very talented Division II team.”

“We made a few mistakes and let the game get out of our grasp. The girls are looking forward to hopefully getting another opportunity to play them.”

Oakdale’s boys water polo team is also hungry for a second shot at opponents after slipping to their second conference defeat in 7-5 fashion to Sonora. Oakdale trailed just 5-4 in the final period, until a backwards pass from Adam Lahey accidentally went directly to Sonora’s top shooter, Bennett Personius.

The Sonora player sped across the pool for an easy score, adding one more when Oakdale coach Brian Kline attempted to move his players up the pool while Sonora still had the ball.

The loss didn’t damper a terrific effort from Oakdale goaltender Frank Rossier, who landed an astounding 17 saves in defeat.

“I thought Frank played exceptionally well with the opportunity he had to stop shots,” Brian Kline said. “The cohesiveness of our defense wasn’t there for us today.”

The Mustangs will get another shot at Sonora on Oct. 24, and play the Ripon team that beat them by two goals on Oct. 17.

“I know it’s only been a couple of minutes, but we are definitely already looking forward to Ripon in two weeks and Sonora in three,” Kline said. “We are eager to get back in the pool against them.”

Boys Soccer

The Mustang boys rallied behind goals from Sergio Gutierrez, Johnny Torres, Miguel Barajas, Sean Harrity and Mike Adian to beat Sonora 5-1 on Oct. 2. Zeke Spani landed five saves in the victory.

Two days later, five saves from Spani and four stops by Jake Hicks helped to hold Sierra close, but the Timberwolves didn’t surrender anything in a 3-0 win over the Mustangs.

Oakdale (4-4 VOL) hosts Lathrop on Thursday in a 6:30 p.m. night game.

Girls Tennis

Oakdale eased past Kimball 7-2 on Oct. 2 after singles wins from Francesca Orvis, Nicole Dickens and Christine Winders and doubles wins by the pairs of Taylor Kelley/Alyssa Perigen, Melissa VanDyke/Rachelle Pabalan and Madison Lane/Alyssa Flores.

Flores and Perigen joined forced to defeat East Union during a 6-3 win two days later. VanDyke and Pabalan also made a winning team while Orvis, Winders, Davis and Kelley landed singles wins.

Oakdale hosts Sierra on Thursday.
