Gerald William ‘Jerry’ Dickens

POSTED August 15, 2012 2:31 p.m.

Gerald William ‘Jerry’ Dickens, 66, of Knights Ferry died Saturday, Aug. 11 with his wife and children by his side.

He was born in Modesto to Arnold and Helen Dickens where he was raised working on his family farm. As a teenager he enjoyed water skiing and was a member of the Modesto Ski Bums. At the age of 15 he was involved in a water skiing accident that left him paralyzed. His courage was evidence that he would never let his challenges define him. He graduated from Thomas Downey High School.

He and his uncle Lloyd Dickens established a successful furniture business together, Dickens Furniture.

In 1967, he married Kathy Cochran and together they raised two children.

Mr. Dickens enjoyed spending time with his family. The most important thing was having his family by his side in all he did. He also enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. In 1982, he and his wife moved their family to Knights Ferry where he became involved with the community as the treasurer of the Knights Ferry Fire and Rescue.

Over the years he raised cattle and especially enjoyed his registered Santa Gertrudis cattle.

He will be remembered for his never-ending kindness and his incredible love of life. His many friends are a reflection of his character.

His family thanks the doctors, nurses and caregivers who cared for him.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathy; children, Nicole (Jason) Hixon of Oakdale, Matthew (Jenna) Dickens of Oakdale; brother, Tom (Sharlene) Dickens of Modesto; and six grandchildren, Rawlin and Holly Hixon, and Wyatt, Luke, Levi and Maddie Dickens.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Helen Dickens.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 17 at Lakewood Memorial Park Cemetery on Santa Fe Road, Hughson.

Remembrances may be sent to Calvary Chapel Oakdale, P.O. Box 1531, Oakdale, CA 95361, or to your favorite charity.
