Challenger Sports Brings British Camp To Kids

POSTED August 7, 2012 2:13 p.m.

Learning some of the finer points of the game and going through a series of drills, youngsters taking part in various age and skill divisions of the Oakdale Youth Soccer League, OYSL, had the opportunity for some high level instruction this past week.

Coaches with the Challenger Sports program were in town, hosting a British Soccer camp at T.L. Davis Sports Complex, with some sessions also designed for competitive teams as well as the recreational youth participants.

Meanwhile, OYSL officials are planning a return to the previous format for youth soccer, utilizing the traditional recreational league this year instead of the academy-style program of last year. OYSL is providing the recreational soccer program for Oakdale, Riverbank, Escalon, Waterford and the surrounding areas. All children ages 4 and up are encouraged to participate.

League president Jo Harris said the feedback from parents, coaches and the community was overwhelmingly in favor of returning to the traditional rec program.

“We will have uniformed teams, referees and organized games each weekend this fall,” Harris said. “We will also offer competitive programs for those who want to grow to a higher level of play.”

A Referee Certification class for those interested in becoming a paid referee is fast approaching as well. The class will be held over three sessions starting on Aug. 10, and will conclude with a certification test on Aug. 15.

Registration for the Fall Recreation Program and Referee Course is available on line at oakdalesoccer.org.
