POSTED June 20, 2012 12:13 a.m.

Mary Claudette Napier, 81, passed away on Thursday, June 7 after a long illness. She was born on Oct. 5, 1930 and grew up in Knights Ferry.

She was a multi-talented businesswoman and artist, best known for her mosaics. She was also skilled in enameling, charcoal, and was an accomplished seamstress and reweaver. She had a successful cleaner’s business in Stockton for over 13 years, and she worked as an interior designer as well.

She always gave her best, no matter where she was employed. She set high standards for her children in literary and intellectual pursuits as well as imbuing them with sense of tolerance and a spirit of adventure.

Known for her wit, passion, her kindness, and her generosity, it is her laughter that will especially be missed.

Survivors include her younger sister, Ida Levine of Oakdale; daughter Teresa and son-in-law Richard Vierra of Chiloquin, Oregon, son Larry P. Shatswell and daughter-in-law Sharon Lynn of Elizabeth, Colorado, daughter Penny Lynn and son-in-law Dr. James E. Dunn of Eagle River, Wisconsin; grandchildren Cybil, Jonathon, David, Justin, Amy, Tyler, Timothy; great-grandson Isiah; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Leanna Hinz of Oakdale, Bessie Sefried of Stockton; her brother Larry Napier (a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars); and her loving parents Esther Louise and Claude Earl Napier of Knights Ferry.
