All Star Weekend - Ten OHS Grads To Compete In All-Star Contests

POSTED June 13, 2012 3:16 a.m.

That proverbial ‘fat lady’ still hasn’t stepped up to the microphone.

A collection of ten 2012 Oakdale High graduates will enjoy one final contest as a Mustang this weekend at football, softball and baseball all-star games in Stockton and Modesto.

The three contests offer special recognition of standout Mustang athletes who led Oakdale to Sac-Joaquin Section championships in both softball, baseball and runner-up status in the prestigious Division III SJS football playoffs.

The all-star football selections include Marcus Hernandez, Justin Martin and Cody Cole while Kody Simons, Stefan Aguilar and Andy Morris made the all-star baseball roster. All-star softball honors went to senior foursome Ghianna Falconi, Stephanie Fauria, Kaila Olson and Shelby Reali.

Softball
The 22nd Annual High School All-Star Classic softball game is the first to start on Friday, June 15 at 6:15 p.m. (opening ceremonies) at the University of the Pacific. The contest sees a $5 gate admission while children eight-and-under enter free. The proceeds of the game benefit the Recreation Sports Club of San Joaquin, the participating high school sports programs and the Stockton Community Council of United Way.

The game expects to feature 24 girls on the ‘South’ roster pitted against 20 on the ‘North.’ The game has plenty of Valley Oak League familiarities as it rosters players from Kimball (three), Weston Ranch (two), East Union (two), Sierra (one), Manteca (one) and Sonora (one).

Oakdale landed four well-deserved selections after conference and section titles in a 27-3-1 overall season. The Lady Mustangs beat returning SJS champions, Sierra, in four of five 2012 meetings and landed 10-run mercy-rule victories in the first round of the playoffs.

Baseball
Mustang seniors weren’t ignored after rallying to a third consecutive section title and fifth in six straight seasons. Oakdale players represent three of the 22 members of the ‘East’ roster at the 2012 Modesto Sunrise Rotary Baseball Classic to be played at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, at John Thurman Field.

The contest features the best juniors and seniors in Stanislaus County with proceeds from the contest donated to participating programs. Admission is just $5 at the gate.

The contests pits representatives from Oakdale, Beyer, Big Valley, Central Catholic, Central Valley, Ceres, Downey, Enochs, Hughson, Riverbank and Waterford on the ‘East’ against like ‘West’ selections from Davis, Denair, Gregori, Johansen, Modesto, Modesto Christian, Orestimba, Patterson, Pitman, Turlock and Turlock Christian.

Pitman coach Mick Tate will coach the ‘West’ while Mike Glines of Central Catholic will coach the ‘East.’

Football
Football players will compete in the 39th Annual Lions All Star Football Classic at Modesto Junior College also on Saturday, June 16 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the gate.

Hernandez, Martin and Cole will suit up for the first time since a 21-7 loss to Del Oro in the SJS final on Dec. 2, 2011.
The three are listed on a 32-man roster that includes the best 2012 graduates from across the Central Valley.

All three Mustang grads played vital roles in Oakdale’s push to 13 straight wins to get to the Section championship game. Oakdale beat every opponent by 19 or more points until the SJS final and outscored opponents 642-212 across the season docket.
