Bicyclist Killed On Rodden

POSTED April 24, 2012 10:13 p.m.

Authorities have released the name of a bicyclist killed along Rodden Road early Sunday afternoon, April 22 as Michael Scherper, 68, of Oakdale.

Scherper was struck by a truck as he was turning his bicycle into a driveway shortly after noon.

California Highway Patrol officers reported that Scherper was riding his bicycle eastbound on Rodden Road east of Gray Fox Way at an unknown speed. A 36-year-old Oakdale man was driving his vehicle, a 1975 International C-150 pick-up westbound on Rodden at about 40 mph and a second driver, a 32-year-old Stockton woman, was in her VW Jetta behind the pick-up.

According to the CHP report, Scherper turned his bicycle to the left into the westbound lane of Rodden, directly ahead of the pick-up truck driver. The motorist applied his brakes in an attempt to avoid Scherper but was unable to stop and the front of his truck struck the man. Scherper was ejected from his bicycle and then struck the left front of the second vehicle.

Sherper was wearing a safety helmet but suffered fatal injuries.

Authorities did not list any charges against the drivers, and neither one reported any serious injuries as a result of the incident.
