Fishing Report

POSTED February 28, 2012 10:55 p.m.

Delta Report:
Bass fishing is good right now as the weather has been perfect lately. For reaction baits, any crawdad imitating bait is working well. For those flipping or pitching, wacky rigged Senko’s or black and blue jigs seem to be key baits right now. With this current weather and the time of year it’s really a toss up right now. You can possibly have one of the best days of fishing one day and one of the worst days of fishing the next.

Lake New Melones:
Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sports reports “There were lots of very nice fish caught this week, with most anglers catching their limits. The average size fish is about 2-pounds. Trout are right up in the shallows, spawning and chasing bait. Bank anglers have been using Power bait (the garlic scent is working great), Gulp eggs, marshmallows, and night crawlers to catch them. It is very important that your bait floats. Use small hooks, plenty of Power bait, and a worm blower to float a crawler. The entire bait rig is very simple but effective. It consists of an egg sinker, barrel swivel, 12” to 48” leader, and a small hook. Most of the fish that are being caught are full of small shad. Try using shad patterned lures. Anything with a little silver on it will resemble fleeing shad.” Bass fishing is beginning to turn on. In a recent tournament there were a lot of 10 lb. limits being brought to the scales, two of those fish were over nine pounds, which were caught on swim baits.

Lake Don Pedro:
The trout and king salmon bite is very good right now. The hot area is between the 49 Bridge to the Jacksonville Bridge. Anglers are trolling either shad patterned spoons or rolled shad while letting their lead core lines out 5 to 7 colors. Bass fishing is good; there is a good swim bait bite right now. Angers are either tossing large Huddleston swim baits or Alabama Rigs for the bigger fish.

Lake Pardee:
Fishing continues to be good from the shore. The recreation area is still holding plenty of trout that seem to be unwilling to leave the area and venture out into the main lake. The Launch Ramp, Rainbow Point, Tom Sawyer Island, and the point directly across from the East end of the Marina are all good areas right now. Sliding sinker set ups are the most successful and silver/blue Kastmasters seems to be the favorite bait of lure fishermen. Not much to report about the bass fishing on the lake right now as it’s been very quiet. As the water temperature warms a little look for the bass to start making their way toward the obvious spawning areas.
