It was slow in coming, but it appears the winter has finally arrived with a cold front that promises windy, wet weather for the entire weekend, Friday through Sunday, Jan. 20-22.

A wind advisory is in effect for the northern San Joaquin valley starting from 4 p.m. Friday, to 4 a.m. on Saturday so if you're on the roads, drive slowly and cautiously to accomodate the dangerous conditions.

According to weather.com, the valley can expect south winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts 40 to 45 mph. In the foothills and coastal range south winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts 40 to 55 mph. The worst of the wind is slated to blow through Friday evening. Driving conditions at this time will be difficult and local power outages are possible.

Rain is expected throughout Friday and Saturday with the sun scheduled to make a tenative appearance on Sunday with a 20 percent chance of rain and mostly cloudy skies. The storm front is expected to bring snow in the higher elevations, which will be a welcome sight for those who have been waiting for good conditions suitable for skiing and snowboarding. According to the National Weather Service, the snow level is hovering around 7,800 feet elevation. Dodge Ridge resort in Pinecrest opened Friday, Jan. 20.
