Run For The Cheese Takes Off On Saturday

POSTED October 5, 2011 12:44 a.m.

A high-quality mountain bike will be up for grabs for a grand prize winner on Saturday, Oct. 8 as hundreds flock to Galaxy Theatres in Riverbank for the 18th “Run For The Cheese” at 8 a.m.
The event is hosted by the ShadowChase Running Club of Modesto, and includes five and 10 kilometer runs that begin at Galaxy Theatres and end at the same location.
The race fees are $25 (adults) and $20 (children), and include custom sweatshirts (first 300 registered participants) and entry in a raffle for several great prizes after the races are over.
The 10k course is limited to runners, but the 5k course is open to walkers as well as runners.
Proceeds from the race will be donated to the inspirational Team Triumph program hosted by Memorial Hospital in Modesto.
The program works with cancer survivors and their friends and family in running, walking, yoga, biking and other wellness programs.
“For the past five years we have been getting donations together for Triumph, and it’s one of the big things that come from this event,” Run For The Cheese co-director Vickie Chu-Hermis said. “We have a lot of cross country kids out there volunteering and working at water stations. It’s just a really cool event that gets everyone involved.”
The race speeds through Riverbank streets, and also weaves over gentle rolling hills and picturesque neighborhoods in the City of Action.
Chu-Hermis and the ShadowChase Running Club stepped in to take over the race in 2004 after the event saw a two-year lapse in its running when longtime race director Bruce Edwards (former Riverbank cross country coach) decided safety concerns created a liability issue for race goers.
But the ShadowChase Running Club soon stepped in with an alternate route that provided safety for racers and stayed close to the festival crowd only a mile away.
Galaxy stepped in to provide a perfect launch point, and played a big role in the resurgence of the event.
“Galaxy has been awesome to work with, and they open their facilities and inside bathrooms to the event, which is really nice,” Chu-Hermis said. “Riverbank provides a really great venue where you get really nice neighborhoods where it’s not all flat and you get some rolling hills.”
