Valley Home News for July 27, 2011

POSTED July 26, 2011 10:22 p.m.

What an exciting weekend for our Valley Home 4-H’ers who attended the Stanislaus County Fair. In last week’s column we wrote about Garret Bryhni’s exciting win at the Fair and his entry beating out over 400 other pigs and that he was now looking for buyers for the animal. Garret named his animal “All That” and his entry came away with the title of Supreme Champion Market Hog, and thanks to the efforts of “Friends of Garret” he received $41.00 a pound, $11,152, for his 272-pound hog. We received word that “All That” will happily remain with Garret and become a mother of future fair winners at the ranch here in Valley Home, and the buyer will receive another hog in its place. Congratulations and best wishes to Garret from all his Valley Home friends and neighbors on his winning entry, and a “Happy Ever After” to “All That.”
We have not received all the 4-H Fair winners as yet, but will list them in next week’s column. The names of winners that we have received thus far all sound great! Kiley Rinna placed high in her rabbit breed show and came away with many 1st, 2nds and 3rds. Kiley showed Mini Rex, Lion Heads and Lops.
We received word that Halley Rose Smith showed California single fryers and meat pens and did very well. She also entered black and white and colored photographs and earned 2nds and 3rds for her entries. Halley also made and decorated cupcakes and not only came away with 1st in her class, but also Best of Show.
We hear that Cody Bartholomew showed chickens and a duck and did well! We are looking forward to hearing more from Cody on his entries!
We are looking forward to receiving the results on our 4-H sheep, beef and goat entries and will share it with our readers in next week’s column.

Don’t forget to drop by the Oak Valley Art Society’s “Art in the Park” event being held at the Fruit Yard located at the corner of Geer Road and Yosemite on August 7th and enjoy an opportunity to see our Valley Home artists in action and perhaps go back home with the special work of art you have been looking for to brighten up the walls at home. Admission is free and you will have a wonderful opportunity to see our artists in action in a beautiful park setting.

Don’t forget to join your neighbors and friends at Neighborhood Watch National Night Out festivities being hosted by the San Joaquin and Valley Home groups on Tuesday evening, August 2nd at the Valley Home Community Park. You are invited to bring your favorite food dishes to share at the event which begins at 5:30 p.m. and goes until 9 p.m. Paper plates, cups, silverware and napkins will be provided by the San Joaquin group and Valley Home members will provide bottles of ice cold water. The event is a great way to enjoy an opportunity to get to know your neighbors and share news on what is happening in your neighborhood. San Joaquin has a very active Neighborhood Watch group and can offer many suggestions for reforming a group in our area.

The Valley Home Community Center Park is now a reality but as such it needs the support of residents to help operate it properly and be successful. If you are willing to support the park and volunteer some of your time on various aspects of park operation please contact VHCC board member Glenn Burghardt at Valley Home News (chitons7@gmail.com). You will enjoy being part of the community and help us keep the park sparkling. We look forward to hearing from you.
