The Oakdale High swimming program has continually made strides through the 2009 season and the squad’s effort and initiative paid off with a boys Valley Oak League title and a third place finish in the girls division.
The Mustangs used strong performances from their standout relay teams and individual success from Kevin Mahaney, Tyler Lee and Andrew Van Cleave to cruise to the VOL crown.
Mahaney took home a third place finish in the 100-meter free, while teammate Van Cleave won the 100-meter backstroke. Lee qualified also in the 100-meter back along with the 100-meter breast and 200-meter IM.
The crew’s strong showing earns them a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Swim Tournament May 15 at Tokay High in Lodi.
The Lady Mustangs had a great deal of success as well, finishing the VOL tournament in third place overall behind the league champion Sierra Timberwolves and the East Union Lancers.
Oakdale saw strong performances at the Modesto Junior College meet from their usual point earners, with Stevie Cordoza, Savannah Stender, Kelsey Knollmueller and Jessica Myers qualifying in multiple events.
Knollmueller will be in the water at Tokay for four events, including the 100, 200, 500-meter freestyles and the 100-meter breast. Teammate Stender will also see multiple events, earning a berth in the 50, 100 and 200-meter free. Jessica Myers will be treading through water in two events, the 100-meter free and the 100-meter fly.
The boys underclassmen level saw three of its standouts earn a spot in the section meet, as Brett Taylor (50-free, 100-breast), Brandon Terwilliger (50-free) and Hank Walter (100-free, 200-free, 100-back) all extending their seasons.
Oakdale closed out the championship meet with the highest combined score of any two varsity programs, combining for 255 points over the two divisions. Sierra High combined for a total of 231.
The Lady Mustangs’ third place effort saw the group earn 102 points, while the VOL champion boys squad totaled 153 points.
