Some big finishes to their respective Valley Oak League campaigns has Oakdale High softball and track and field athletes ready for big postseason performances this month. Both will take on Divisional competition next week.

Track and Field

The top three place winners from each event at Saturday’s Valley Oak League championships at Modesto Junior College nabbed advancement to the Division III Sac-Joaquin Section Championships on May 17 and 19.

Oakdale came home with 24 athletes bound for another trip to MJC and D-III competition.

All four of Oakdale’s relay teams finished top three to make the trip. The girls watched Sara Aguayo, Justina Keith, Me’che Brown and Kim Linder finish first in the 1600-meter relay.

Brown, Keith, Carolina Vicklund and Courtney Lopes also nabbed first in the 400 relay.

Freshman Desiree Pennington exploded onto the varsity scene with a 32 foot, 10 inch leap to win the varsity triple jump. She also placed third in the 200.

Brown was second in the 200 and third in the 100, qualifying for four total events.

Macey Caris won the high jump while Domi Powell ended third in both the high jump and long jump.

Aguayo was second in the 300 hurdles while Jordan Esparza finished fourth in the 100 hurdles, but will still qualify because of a scheduled absence from the D-III meet.

Jaylene Ponce won the shot put and watched Carly Rogers and Brooke Wong finish second and third, respectively, in the pole vault.

Hailey Macedo was third in both the 1600 and 3200 while Ashlyn Durham (800) and Linder (400) finished third in their events to qualify.

Marco Camacho led the Mustang boys by tossing over 157 feet to win the discus and over 51 feet to win the shot put.

Daniel Linder was second in the long jump and finished third with Wyatt Coffee, Anthony Munoz and Juan Gonzales (third in the 200) in the 400 relay.

Coffee, Linder, Gino Valente (third in the 400) and Bryan Best (second in the 800) also took third in the 1600 relay.

Manny Hernandez was also second in the high jump and Brent Murdoch third in the pole vault.

Oakdale’s junior varsity team was led by some strong performances from double-winners Kyle Peterson and Max Stillwood.

“It was a very windy day, but I thought our kids did a great job with no really bad surprises,” Oakdale coach Dave Bacigalupi said. “Everybody pretty much did what we were hoping they would do.”

Softball

Oakdale closed the regular season with a 16-hit, 12-1 dismantling of Manteca on May 5 to finalize a second seed from the Valley Oak League into the Division IV Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

Shelby Reali went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and a double while Brianna Parker hit 1 for 1 with a home run and four RBIs.

Shelby Cordova continued her impressive stanza at the plate with a 2 for 3 day and saw hits from Sarah Peterson (two), Kaila Olson (two), Ghianna Falconi, Brooke Magnussen and Francesca Orvis.

Parker tossed four innings with three strikeouts while Cordova pitched two innings to close the game.

Oakdale takes on the second seed from the Western Athletic Conference (Patterson or Los Banos) to open the Division IV playoffs on May 18 at the Arnaiz Softball Complex in Stockton. A win propels the team to see the winner of Cosumnes Oaks (11-0) and Kimball (10-4) in the championship quarterfinals the same day.
