Oakdale High graduate and current Chico State student, track and field star John Brunk, will take on the best athletes in the California Collegiate Athletic Association from May 5 to 7 this week when the CCAA hosts its conference championships at Stanislaus State in Turlock.

Brunk’s versatility will be on display during the decathlon on the first two days of the championship tournament, and he will battle in individual events on the final day of action.

He and his Wildcat teammates will be defending both men’s and women’s conference titles they snared a season ago.

Brunk is fresh off some quality performances in several events at the Oregon-California Border Clash on April 23.

With several teams competing, Brunk stayed busy to place fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.86 seconds), and finished fourth in the 1600 relay, ninth in the pole vault, ninth in the javelin, 13th in the discus and 15th in the 100.

Brunk is just a sophomore, and has a bright future at Chico State ahead of him. He was a standout for the Mustangs during his tenure at OHS as well, playing both soccer and excelling in track and field. He has continued to progress in his track and field skills in college, taking advantage of the opportunity to get involved in the decathlon competition that was not available at the high school level.
