Bernice D. Lial, 93, passed away on Thursday, March 31 at Crossroads Manor in Riverbank.

She had been a resident of Escalon for 75 years. She was born on Feb. 11, 1918 in Cottonwood to Joe and Angelina Costa. She was a very hardworking lady who enjoyed working on the farm. She loved her family and cherished her grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Richard (Josephine) Lial of Escalon, Marlene (Pete) Callizo of Escalon, and Janice (Tom) Gookin of Oakdale; grandchildren, Rick Lial of Escalon, Michael (Kim) Callizo of Modesto, Michelle Gookin of Tuolumne City, Tony Callizo of Escalon, Gabe (Jessica) Gookin of Oakdale, Marnice Callizo of Grover Beach, Ron Gookin of Novato, and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Tony, her sisters Mary Machado and Lucy Freitas, and her parents.

Her service will be held on Wednesday, April 6 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with burial following at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Escalon.

Memorial donations may be sent to Escalon Ambulance, Optimal Hospice, or Crossroads Manor.
