Don’t Blink - MMA’s McDonald Makes Quick Work Of Perez

POSTED February 23, 2011 12:05 a.m.

It took six weeks for Oakdale Mixed Martial Arts fighter and Modesto native Brad McDonald to train for the seventh professional bout of his career, but only a handful of seconds for him to finish it.

McDonald absorbed a quick rush from Southern California fighter Davis Perez at the first bell, and delivered a furious flurry of punches in response. The last strike dropped a stunned Perez to the canvas for a decisive victory just 25 seconds into the opening round.

“I think it was a straight right that did it,” McDonald said on Monday. “He charged, then I put him to sleep and went home.”

The win, part of the Legends Collide II card at the Sobobo Casino in San Jacinto on Sunday, earned McDonald a quick $1,000 purse for his effort, and advanced the 18-year-old’s career to a sterling 6-1.

McDonald first gained fame when he became one of the nation’s youngest professional fighters at just 16 years of age. His older brothers Michael McDonald and Justin Smitely are also professional fighters, Michael on the brink of three guaranteed fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championships.

Both brothers were in his corner, along with Oakdale MMA instructor Tom Theofanopoulos, during the fight. Last Stand Fight Team members Bill Theofanopoulos, Peter Gall, Eloy Garza and Jordan Keckler also made the trek.

Brad will take a week off before heading back to the gym to help train brother Michael for his UFC debut in Seattle on March 26. Then Brad will begin his own pre-fight keep for a May 5 contest against Jesse Bowen at the Tachi Palace Casino and Resort in Lemoore.

It’s just one more bout on a deep list of prime time fights for an ever-improving MMA club.

“We are in a small town without a whole lot of resources, but with hard work and correct training we have been able to do what the doubters said we couldn’t do,” instructor Theofanopoulos said. “These guys have made successful careers for themselves.”
