Lady Mustangs Go 2-1 In Hoops Tournament Play

POSTED December 8, 2010 1:02 a.m.

Oakdale High senior Cassandra Clark scored 44 points in the first two games of the season, but missed the next one and watched Oakdale’s varsity girls’ basketball team play to a 1-2 showing in the competitive Golden Valley Tournament over the weekend.

The Mustangs dropped a 52-34 game to Enochs in the tournament opener before a 60-38 rout of Le Grand in game No. 2. With both Cassandra and Kelsey Clark missing from the line up (school testing), Oakdale slipped to Hoover in their tourney finale by a 55-23 score.

“I was a little disappointed in our play, but we did have some good individual performances,” Oakdale coach Gary Smith said. “I still think by the end of preseason we will be a good basketball team.”

Junior Ashley Edwards broke onto the varsity scene with some big games in the post. She nabbed 15 rebounds and 14 points against Le Grand, adding 11 eight points and seven rebounds against a tough Hoover team.

Naydee Fernandez scored 11 on Le Grand as well.

“We just had way too many turnovers,” Smith said. “We need to improve our rebounding because offensively we are not getting enough second opportunities.”

Oakdale slipped to a 1-2 showing in the Escalon Tournament this past weekend, but saw bright spots on the court and a 38-9 blowout win over Downey in the second round.

Micah Barton scored 12 against Escalon (a 41-20 loss), 14 on Downey and another 17 vs. Ripon Christian (38-26 defeat). Kylie Gust nabbed 11 rebounds and four steals against Downey while Francesca ‘Frenchie’ Orvis collected seven rebounds and six steals on Ripon Christian.

“They worked extremely hard and tried extremely hard,” Oakdale coach Heather Brown said. “They were always at max effort, and if they keep up that intensity then I am definitely optimistic about them improving.”
