Preserve Safety Net

POSTED June 23, 2009 3:57 p.m.
Dear Editor,
Imagine: Two million more Californians without health care. An avalanche of pink slips sent to teachers. The elderly forced into nursing care. Women trying to get off public assistance and back to work losing any means of subsistence.
Not only are the cuts in the Governor’s latest budget proposal cruel, but his spending plan doesn’t add up. It will drain $24 billion from California's economy, stunting the state’s recovery efforts.
The severe cuts will devastate millions of poor and middle-class Californians and shred the safety net when people need it most.
California’s safety net must be preserved. I urge California lawmakers to do everything possible to minimize the severity of these cuts. They need to pass a sensible, balanced budget solution that includes new revenues, not just devastating cuts.
