Varsity Gridders Cruise Past Visiting Jaguars

POSTED October 5, 2010 11:51 p.m.
A 62-0 loss to Manteca High on Sept. 24 was a rude welcoming for Kimball to prep football in the highly competitive Valley Oak League.
The team, comprised of 22 sophomores and juniors in their first ever varsity season, didn’t find any more luck the following week at Oakdale’s Corral.
The host varsity Mustangs led 41-3 at the half, and watched reserve players finish a 58-9 Homecoming rout in the second VOL contest of the season.
Due to some erroneously awful scheduling (including preseason contests against crosstown teams Tracy and West), Kimball has been outscored 198-10 in the first halves of games this season.
Oakdale wingback Daniel Linder ensured the continuance of that tradition with touchdown runs of 4 and 40 yards to open Friday’s convincing win.
A.C. Brown hauled in a 29-yard touchdown pass to open the second quarter, and ran one in from 9 yards out with over 11 minutes to play in the half.
Linder’s third touchdown, along with a Marcus Hernandez rushing score and a Spencer Thomas to Marcus Northcutt connection, gave Oakdale its 38-point lead at the break.
Jeff Donnelly opened Oakdale’s second half with a 2-yard burst into the Kimball end zone. A quarter later, Justin Martin booted a 52-yard field goal for the final tally in a one-sided game.
The kick is the longest field goal in Oakdale High history, according to Oakdale sports guru and longtime announcer, Pete Simoncini,
Oakdale (2-0 VOL, 3-2 overall) won’t see their biggest games of the VOL season until the final two weeks of play against Manteca (2-0, 5-0) and Sonora (2-0, 4-1).
This week will pit the Mustangs against Lathrop (0-2, 2-3), who dropped a 35-14 contest to Sonora (the Wildcats led 28-0 at the half) last week.
Lathrop is led by a battle-tested group of competitors that include juniors Christian Pena (16 rushes, 92 yards vs. Sonora) and Andrew Aquino (114 total yards, touchdown vs. Sonora).
