Weekly Farmers Market Wrapping Up Schedule

POSTED August 25, 2010 12:45 a.m.

The music will stop, all the farm-fresh produce will be gone, and Oakdale residents who are still looking for a taste of summer will have to wait until next year.

The last Oakdale Certified Farmers Market of the season will be held tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 26, and those who frequent the market will be eagerly waiting its return next year.

“It went well,” said Chris Phomas, a recreation leader for the City of Oakdale who oversees the farmers market.

“We had an emphasis this year to add more produce, and bring out more local farmers,” Phomas said. “That will be our goal next year, also.”

The market, which was held on Thursdays throughout the summer, began on May 27. It has generally run from the last Thursday in May to the last Thursday in August, but Phomas said one of the issues city staff will discuss during the off season is extending the market for a few weeks.

“Corn hasn’t come out yet, and this would also allow us to offer fruits such as apples,” Phomas pointed out.

The Oakdale Certified Farmers Market first started in July 2006 behind the efforts of the Downtown Merchants Association. Since then it has grown in both the numbers of vendors offering produce and other items and local residents attending the market.

A few years ago bands began playing at the market, usually setting up shop in the middle of North Third Avenue.

“We had 150 people attending last week,” Phomas said, noting the size of the crowd. “We always have a good turnout, and the good weather has also helped.”

The Oakdale Certified Farmers Market takes place on North Third Avenue between F Street and E Street. It runs from 5 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
