Sandoval Tunes Up For Bout With Olympic Silver Medalist

POSTED August 18, 2010 4:24 a.m.

Oakdale High graduate and Last Stand Fight Team mixed martial arts fighter, Martin Sandoval, will enter the cage to take on one of the greatest wrestlers in United States history next month.

Sandoval has agreed to a fight contract with 2004 Olympic silver medalist, three-time NCAA Division I champion and four-time NCAA All American, Stephen Abas.

The bout, a three-round contest in the Pure Combat fight league, will pit Sandoval (6-2) against undefeated Abas (2-0) for the third match of the former Olympians’ young MMA career.

Abas will carry some serious home field advantage in the contest, which is expected to take place on Sept. 25 in the Fresno area. Abas earned each of his national championships with the Fresno State University Bulldogs.

Sandoval, a former Oakdale High wrestler and soccer player, is well aware of Abas’ extensive career on the mat, and has begun an intense training regiment to prepare for the fight.

“I’ve been prepared for anything and anybody, covering all aspects of the fight,” Sandoval said Monday. “The professor (instructor Tom Theofanopoulos) has us on a new workout and I think it will be the best keep (pre-match trainings) I have ever had.

“I will be ready for whatever Abas brings to the table.”

Sandoval is fresh off a first round submission victory over Alex Gonzales at the Red Hawk Casino in Placerville in July.
