Oakdale Loses Longtime Veterinarian

Lowell Clyde ‘Doc’ Dorius, D.V.M., 79, died Friday, July 2 at home with his dear friend Pat Kuhn by his bedside.He was born in Ephraim, Utah to Clyde Louis Dorius and Naomi Dorius. He grew up during the Depression on the family ranch in Fayette, Utah.He graduated in 1953 from Utah State University and earned his doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University in 1956.In 1958, he relocated to Oakdale to work in a mixed veterinary practice. In 1972, he opened his own large animal practice, which he operated for the rest of his life.Mr. Dorius was a kind and caring man who had a passion for his profession. Specializing in beef cattle, he embraced the ranchers he worked for as his own family. He took joy in mentoring young men and women on the care of cattle and they rode with him many hours making calls.His fondest leisure time was spent with friends and included trips, skiing, hunting, and cruising. He was dearly loved and respected by his friends, the families he served and the community of Oakdale.He was a Lifetime Member of Lions Club International, and the Oakdale Lions Club will display American flags in his honor around the community on the day of his celebration of life service.He was also a member of the California Veterinary Medical Association, Chair of the Stanislaus County Republican Central Committee when Ronald Reagan ran for governor, the 2005 Honoree of the Oakdale Cowboy Museum for his service to the livestock industry and the community of Oakdale, a former board member of the American Heart Association, and was instrumental in the founding of Oak Valley Hospital. He was also a member of Oakdale Dinner Club, the Quarterback Club, Oakdale Sportsmen’s Club, Oakdale Lions Club, the N.R.A., and the California Waterfowl Association.He is survived by his longtime companion, Pat Kuhn of Oakdale; children, Lee Kevin (Carrie Lynn) Dorius of San Jose, Robyn Gay (Natividad) Dorius of Hughson; siblings, Mary Colleen Roundy, Ann D. Lee, Dale M. Dorius, Dixie Bond Evan, Clair Louis Dorius, all of Utah; grandson, Prescott Michael Schiro-Dorius of San Jose; and many nieces and nephews.His friends are hosting a celebration of life from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 18 at The Reata, 160 No. Third, Oakdale, followed by a toast at the H-B Saloon.Remembrances may be made to the Lowell C.
