Sober Grad Night Donations Needed

POSTED May 18, 2010 10:24 p.m.

Oakdale Sober Grad Night (SGN) for Oakdale High School graduates takes place next week and event organizers are still seeking donations to sponsor students with “scholarship” tickets.

SGN advisor Dale Farley shared that the SGN committee recently met and discussed that there are only 30 scholarship tickets so far, which have all been assigned to students, whereas last year there were 78 scholarship tickets.

“The tickets are $50, but any amount toward that would be very appreciated,” said Farley.

Donations can be made online using PayPal at www.ohsgradnight.com or mailed to Oakdale Sober Grad Night, P.O. Box 333, Oakdale, CA 95361. Donations are tax deductible.

“The point of the event is to have a safe and sober graduation venue,” Farley reported. “This keeps not only the graduates safe, but the community as well.”

Farley acknowledged that it has been a tough year for donations, and that they have had to make some cuts to promotional aspects in the budget, but that the SGN committee has “a huge, very cool party planned.”

Last year, 198 graduates attended the all-night party. This year, more than 200 graduates are expected. There will be music all night with Sound Express, California Casino Nights, electric go-carts, carnival games, airbrush tattoo artists, caricature artists, outdoor inflatable games, raffle prizes, cash giveaways, lots of food, and a lap top computer will be given away.

The all-night safe and sober celebration event for OHS graduates follows graduation on Friday, May 28 and runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The SGN event is held at Sierra View Elementary School.

Farley said that the SGN board works to raise funds year-round to keep the ticket price, which has not been raised in four years, as low as possible for the families and to have scholarship tickets for those students who need them.

She added that volunteers are also still needed for the event itself and clean up. The cleanup takes about 45 minutes and begins at 6 a.m. on Saturday, May 29.

For anyone who would like to help or for more information, contact Farley at (209) 918-1848, or e-mail the SGN board through the website at www.ohsgradnight.com.
