What initially started out as a welfare check ended with a pair of arrests on multiple charges. On Wednesday, Dec. 28, at approximately 7 a.m., Oak Valley Ambulance requested Oakdale Police to respond to Motel 6 at 875 E. F St., regarding a female in poor health.

When officers arrived, paramedics informed them that a paralyzed female in her 50’s had been left without care and had soiled herself. At that time, officers noticed a large can of paint thinner sitting on a shelf, numerous cans of chemicals in a dresser drawer and other household cleaning materials in a nearby box.

While police were there, the woman’s son Shane Bailey, 33, and daughter-in-law Julie Bailey, 34, returned to Motel 6 with their three small children. Officers at the scene learned they were the woman’s caretakers. At the motel, Shane Bailey was found to have a syringe in his possession suspected of containing narcotics.

Detectives responded to assist and obtained a search warrant for the room. In the room, officers located numerous hypodermic needles, some uncapped; containing substances believed to be methamphetamine and a black tar substance believed to be heroin.

All items were accessible to the couple’s juvenile children, ages 3, 6, and 7.

A shotgun was also recovered during the search and authorities discovered that the vehicle they were driving was stolen out of Florida.

Shane Bailey and Julie Bailey were arrested on felony elder abuse, felony possession of a stolen vehicle, felony child cruelty, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of narcotics.

Shane Bailey was also arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The paralyzed female was taken to Doctor’s Medical Center for treatment and the three juveniles were released to the care of a family member.
